Originating in Einbeck, Germany, the Bavarian pronunciation of the now world famous town is ’billy goat’! Maltier, stronger and darker than you dare! Think Bavaria, clinking steins and merriment as the perfect accompaniment to this homage to Dopplebock!

Sampled from a 50cl bottle. This beer is a dark ruby colour with a slight white head, soon dispersed. Reasonably malty aroma, and the taste is malty but quite sour. Taste of blackberries and plums. Rather vinegary finish. Low drinkability.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Deep chestnut brown colour, looks great. Unusual beer this, bock ingredients and Batemans yeast I would guess. Malty, sweet, not as clean as a bock. Pleasant.

500ml bottle. Pours a nice conker brown. Nose is raisin, slightly acidic and cidery. Taste is tart, stewed red fruit and alcohol. Managed to finish the bottle but it wasn’t a great experience.

Bottle. Dark ruby ale with a quickly fading tan head. Nose is sweet plum with confection and a touch of toffee. Taste is... malty, but also slightly acidic and raisiny. Just tastes a little wrong. You are willing the malt to take hold of it, but it never really manages and you end up with a alcoholic raisin aftertaste. Meh.

Bottle from B&M. Pours ruby with a dark cream head. The taste is malt fruitiness with a little spice and something quite meaty. A little odd, but OK.

500 mL bottle from Sainsbury. Clear dark red-brown with a bubbly head, albeit it doesn’t hang around for long. Very malty, quite smooth, just a hint of smoke. Vaguely German, a good effort at a bock.

Bottle from my girlfriend. Thanks! Pours clear copper with quickly disappearing white head. Aroma is malt, candy, hint of butter biscuits. Taste is malt, candy, spicy hops.

Bottle 50cl, a dark beer with low head and carbonation. Nose is on toasted grain and caramel. Aroma is flat and mono dimensional on brown caramel, watery body, very boring. Burnt caramel notes at the finish, a very poor homage to Dopplebock.

McTapps (4447) - Ruhrcity, North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - AUG 30, 2014
Bottle from Sainsburys in Folkestone. Pours out in a clear dark brown - light ruby colour with low head and medium body. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel and woods. Taste of pure marmite, yeast, bread, dust and basement. Finishes off like a full tablespoon of marmite in the mouth. Yeast extract. Awful, awful, awful. Could not enjoy it.
