Originating in Einbeck, Germany, the Bavarian pronunciation of the now world famous town is ’billy goat’! Maltier, stronger and darker than you dare! Think Bavaria, clinking steins and merriment as the perfect accompaniment to this homage to Dopplebock!

A dark copper brown coloured beer with a weak off white head. A light but rich dark malt aroma, fruit cake, hints of liquorice, coffee and dark caramel. Dry mouthfeel. The taste is bitter sweet, smooth rich malt flavour, sultana and candied peel fruit cake flavour, dark brown sugar, coffee, liquorice and spices that bring in a mild bitterness. The finish is dark malt led and lengthy.

Bottle from Crafty Pint. Appearance - dark brown going into mahogany. Head disappeared quickly. Nose - demarara sugar into molasses. Taste - more molasses with a liquorice edge. Palate - medium to full bodied with a big tangy and sweet middle section and a finish that is fairly balanced. Overall - enjoyable.

500ml bottle from B&M Bargains. Pours brown with off white head. Malty, sweet and a good representation of a doppelbock. Really rather good and the best Batemans beer I’ve tried.

I don’t usually go for the darker beers, but this was in a random selection I made from Sainsburys 3 for a fiver offer. Tastes is pleasant and easy drinking.
