Cocoa and chocolate aroma, coffee notes. Disappointing head. Dark amber color, almost black. Amazing coffee ice-cream taste, really hits you at the beginning. However, it’s a bit superficial. There is not much on the palate, the finish is quick and the beer doesn’t last.

Bottle from Sainsburys, Kidlington, Sunday 20th October 2013 consumed the same day. Pours brown with large foamy tan head. In the mouth this is chocolate and milky coffee, mmhh.. a touch artificial and not exactly subtle. Its easy drinking, sweet with some bitter cocoa, but all told it is a bit OTT, still it was reduced to £1.39 a bottle so I’m not complaining. Fine. A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov12 3.1

Bottle. Loose tan head. No retention. Dark purple/mahogany body. Milk chocolate, fruit, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, spice, plum, black malt, hops. Smells artificial. Bittersweet. Dry finish.

Bottle from Sainsburys at Claypotts near Dundee. Pours black with a creamy white head. Smells of chocolate with a slight coffee bean. Tastes of dark chocolate and more chocolate! I love this beer.

Appearance: Clear dark ruby/brown with loose, large bubbled tan head about a cm thick. Aroma: Chocolate, notes of bitter chocolate, toast and amaretto biscuit. Taste: Low sweetness, and low/medium bitterness and sourness. Palate: Smooth thick texture and medium body, slightly prickly carbonation, lingering finish sourness and bitterness at the end. Comments: Very tasty, it was a bit like a dessert, very easy to drink and left a glass lace.

Bottle: The label makes a big play of the nose... Smells of of oak, a touch of coffee and cheap milk chocolate. There is some smoke in the mid range. Taste is... cheap milk chocolate, which seems to be the fashion for British chocolate beer who seem to think Nanny’s Easter egg is the height of coco tastes. There is some latte underneath. Mouthfeel is much to thin for the style. Must try harder, and unfortunately the American’s do this type of beer a million times better. Edit: Read the bottle, the idiots have added flavour rather than used the malt and hops. No wonder it’s rubbish. Lose another point for trying to take shortcuts.

500ml bottle shared with mr_h. Dark reddish chestnut brown, reasonable head. Dry grain chocolate malt aroma. Very chocolatey malt flavour. Sickly sweet aftertaste. Tastes like alcoholic cheap chocolate.

500ml brown bottle from Sainsbury’s. Sainsbury’s do have interesting beers in their range. This is a nice idea, though, given that chocolate and coffee flavours can be naturally imparted by the malt, why add those ingredients to the beer. Feels like a gimmick - though a number of brewers like to do it. But it’s like buying a rose that has been sprayed with rose perfume. Anyway, this is a drinkable beer with chocolate and coffee flavours. There you go - what a surprise. It’s a bit cloying and funny enough the flavours taste artificial. Drinkable, but not impressive.
