500ml bottle. Pours dark, like Coca-Cola with very little head. Aroma is malted chocolate. Taste is mainly malt and chocolate. Very little coffee. Slight floral, perfumey hint. Ends very slightly bitter but more or less the same all the way through. Not bad but not great either. Slightly disappointed.

Bottled 16/03/13. Edges towards black with a purple hue. Headless. Silky chocolate in the nose with hints of coffee only. Same in the mouth. Mocha for sure with chocolate dominating. A bit too sweet really but good for Batemans.

Pours very dark brown with a lasting head. Prominent chocolate syrup in the aroma, along with soft toasty and roasted malt and a little coffee. Chocolate is first up as a flavour as well, followed by plain roasted malt and hot alcohol. Nice creamy low carbonation.

Bottle and served in snifter: pours mahogany hued with ruby highlights, small fading fizzy beige head and minimal lace. The aroma is all about the milk chocolate and dark chocolate character, very faint notes of coffee, roast, earthy tobacco and plum esters. The taste is borderline cloy and sweet but just enough twang to cut it down a bit. Just like the nose, the palate detects a touch of dark fruit and tobacco like earthiness. The mouth feel is surprising lighter than expected, not sugary syrupy as I feared. The touch oily and nutty dry. It is okay and at least you get the flavor your would want if you opened this. (Strong Ale? Okay sure it is)

Aroma is chocolate, light coffee and has a slight cola quality. The flavor is chocolate, a background of coffee and a very acidic/mildly tart finish.

Chiswick (159) - Greater London, ENGLAND - MAR 1, 2013
The aroma is nicely wide with chocolate and toffee, the general intensity is mild but pleasing. The beer is coke-brown and clear, but overall looks balanced. The taste initially surprises positively with intensity and additional flavours in addition to the aroma, but quickly loses its power after a few sips. I wish this would’ve lasted longer. Palate is disappointingly weak overall, with a lightly stingy carbonation and water thin texture. Some thickness would’ve brought a lot more oomph into this one. Overall, a nice chocolatey beer with surprising elements; just wish it had more kick and the elements lasted for longer.

500ml Bottle from Sainsbury’s:
Chocolate with some roasted malts and a lot of lighter coffee notes. There is some sugary sweetness and a milk chocolate aroma too.
Dark mahogany brown with red tinges and a thin, light brown, bubbly head that quickly turns to a soapy lacing.
Milk chocolate and roasted malts to start with, along with some light coffee and darker malts. There is a hop filled tang to the beer and an earthy taste coupled with it.
Light medium bodied with a well carbonated and smooth feel to the beer and a clean, dry finish that is quite bitter too.

Plenty of chocolate and to a slightly lesser extent some coffee too. This one was pretty basic tasting and a little ordinary but it was still a nice, drinkable beer. Not a classic one, it was fairly average all round but at least it wasn’t a bad beer either.
