3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Svesse (4389) - Hässelby, - AUG 23, 2006
(Cask at Wenlock Arms, London, 30 July) Colour is black with some ruby notes when seen through light, frothy beige head. Nose is roasted with chocolate, tobacco and wet ashes, a bit modest actually. Taste is roasted with chocolate and tobacco, some citrus as well. Some sweetness but mainly dry. Balanced bitterness in the finish. Medium body. Not very complex, but a nice porter. A long time ago the first cask conditioned porter I ever tasted was Salem Porter, which really was a revelation for me, so I still retain fond feelings about this beer.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAY 16, 2012
From November 2008: The other Friday, after a really crap week at work I stopped off on the way home to see what was on offer in The Cock Hotel (Wellington, Shropshire). To my delight I discovered this truely wonderful beer.
Poured via a handpull into a pint sleeve (I had two pints), it was a fantasticly deep, dark ruby red colour. It looked black when in shaddow, but held up to the light, its true colour could be appreciated. The head was a firm off white blanket of foam, it almost stayed until the end, but didn’t quite make it.
The aroma was of smoked peat, liquorice, roasted and toasted plums, coffee and chocolate all in about equal ammounts.
The taste was as the smell, but with raisens added and some dark toffee.
Just about right in the mouthfeel, not too rich or creamy, but full bodied and wholesome.
Two pints was the perfect ammount, walked home a happier person. Three pints wouldn’t have been a good idea, one pint not enough.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - OCT 5, 2011
First tasted this in the Three Judges, Glasgow in July 1993. Cask, handpump dispense. Dull black in colour with a creamy tan head. Strong roast malt and toffee in the lingering aroma. Burnt toast flavour from the black malt which gives way to plum fruit, soft chewy caramel and liquorice in the dark malt complex. Bitter hop resins present in the dry spicy aftertaste. Bitter and a hint of wood smoke in the finish. This is a good solid porter and well recommended.

Cask at the Cricketers, Croydon. It pours darkest brown, near black, with a thin foamy beige head and low carbonation. The nose is charcoal, liquorice, caramel and a little soy sauce. The taste is charcoal, smoke, liquorice, underlying caramel, roasted malt, nut, dark chocolate, salt and coffee, with a roasty-bitter finish. A really enjoyable cask porter.
