detroitsteel (209), Greater London, England Aug 17, 2007 On draft, The Horniman at Hays. Jet black with a redish tinge, small, fine tan head. I normally don’t give out high marks for aroma but this drop has a exceptional nose, you can smell all the flavours before you put the beer in your mouth: bags of fruity sweetness: apples, grapes, oranges, spicey cinamon and nutmeg. Like a liquid Hot Cross Bun. Then there are roasted notes with the hops coming through to a strong liquorice finish. I had two pints of this and I could have drunk it all night. An exceptional beer. I’d be intrested to have it again in a few mouths to see if my lyrical waxing stands up.
berkshire_john (958), Bracknell, Berkshire, England Jun 18, 2008 Cask at the Alexander Hotel, Derby. Black with a thin tan head; aroma of woodland fruits; earthy, coffee ground flavours with some red fruit; light finish. yespr (5258), Copenhagen O, Denmark Apr 17, 2008 From cask at Charlies. Pours dark brown to black with a diminished tan head. Light liqourice and roasted aroma, medium sweet. Liqourice and roasted malt flavour. Lingering liqourice flavour into the finish. Light sweet flavour. Ends with a light bitterness and a nice sweet liqourice note. Really great! Theis (1838), Frederiksberg, Denmark Apr 14, 2008 Cask at Charlies. Dark brown (almost black) - offwhite head. English licorice, burned, dryness, sweetness, lactose notes (milkey taste/feeling). OK RPillsbury (69), Nottingham, England Mar 27, 2008 Cask at the Lincolnshire Poacher, Nottingham. Weak aroma of roasted malt and a touch of chocolate if you really stick your nose in there. Flavour was better but not that well balanced of dark fruits, liquorice and coffee. It was also too watery. Disappointing. hughie (2013), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England Feb 26, 2008 Cask at the Cricketers, Bedford. Very dark brown with an off white head. Roast chocolate malt aroma. Musty dark sweet and sour taste with some coffee notes. Quite bitter. Thought it was a bit heavy and unsubtle.
