Bottle, from Rhythm & Booze, Grimsby. Deep Gold, lasting fluffy white head and moderate condition. Gentle fruity malt and a hint of melon in the nose, slightly chalky mouthfeel with sweet malt dominant, almost excessive, some gentle caramel notes. Delicate hop bitterness in the finish but little else.

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 leaparsons (6323) - Leicester, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - APR 27, 2012

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 11, 2012
Brown 500ml bottle, brewed to celebrate St George’s Day (23rd April), drank and reviewed on 14th May 2011, 12 months before it’s BBD.
Poured into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ pint vase. It was a lovely amber colour with a good thick head of off-white bubbles on top. The head showed good retension and left some heavy lacing as it followed the beer down the glass.
I prefer my beers to have slightly more malts than hops in their blend, this fitted the bill exactly. Rich (non-sweet) malts hit the nose and carried on into the taste flavours.
Full bodied and smooth, the 4.1% ABV belies it’s strength and depth of substance.
I’ve been critical of Batemans and their trend of brewing so many ’seasonal’ beers in the past, but this is really good and I’ll be looking out for this one from now on.
2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 maeib (6618) - Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, ENGLAND - FEB 1, 2012
Bottled. An amber coloured beer with a whitish head and lacing. Traditional Batemans sweetness and vanilla in the nose. Very bitter in the mouth yet with a flowery note. Really not keen. Not sure why Batemans seasonals are, with very little exception, quite poor.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 mike1977ok (1183) - NETHERLANDS - OCT 23, 2011
Light copper brown colour. Aroma has some slightly roasted malts and a bit of caramel. Easy to drink bitter which is more on the malty than hoppy side and has a slightly floral aftertaste.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Martin243 (242) - Tyne & Wear, ENGLAND - AUG 30, 2011
500ml bottle, Brown beer white head, unprentious playing it safe palate, quite boring.
2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 DruncanVeasey (5136) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - AUG 17, 2011
Bottle from B+M. Clear ruby with a thinning, off-white foam. Not unattractive, typical Bateman’s aroma; wet dough sprinkled with aniseed, mellow spicy hop. Slippery and aniseed-inflected with dips of cake and cola. Spoiling chemical bitterness to finish, some creamy malt and digestives in the aftertaste. Flecks of condition. The bitterness is actually pretty back-of-the-throat and poisonous. Inglorious, but drinkable.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 berkshirejohn (3014) - Bracknell, Berkshire, ENGLAND - JUN 24, 2011
50cl bottle from Aldi. Pale amber with a ring of white head and light carbonation; earthy malt aroma; earthy malt flavour, perhaps a little stale, with some caramel; and then peppery hops to finish. Not very exciting.
