COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is from the Batemans 30 year old Barley Wine recipe and the flavour has been matched with bottles which had been left undiscovered for 31 years only to be found in 2007. The 2012 Vintage was brewed with barleys from a set of unique growing conditions including a prolonged dry period followed by very wet weather, producing grains which impart crisp, dry, rich flavours. It is packed full of succulent malt and after maturing in oak, has flavours of plums, port, malt, brandy, vanilla and almonds

22nd July 2016: 500ml bottle number 062400 of 2013 has been chosen by me to be my 6,000th rate on this site. Poured slowly into a Batemans Pint Sleeve glass at home and shared with no one! Chestnut red body with a fast fading off-white head. Mild red wine traces in the malt led aroma and taste. I love these ’British old school, winter coal fire, type of brews’. Pull up an armchair, put your slippers on and sip this while listening to the wind whistling past the windows. Rich, smooth and Port like on the palate, mini-wood notes and a nutty hint within a proper, well made beer. Loved it.

500ml bottle, 2013 Vintage, Bottle No. 040303. Reddish tinged amber brown colour, off-white foam head and aroma of malt, toffee, dried fruits, light spice. Taste is sweet malty, brown sugar, fruit cake, raisins, honey, vanilla, almonds, some spice and woody earthy bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry tangy nutty finish. Quite drinkable.

Desverger (7715) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - APR 13, 2016
Bottle split with the Mrs, acquired from Gottschalch Antiques, Læderstræde, Copenhagen (03/04/2017) - fuzzy reddish amber pour with off-white head. Prominent sweet malty aroma and taste, cake like with lots of sweetness with an abundance of treacle, caramel, some dried fruit nuance, light burnt icing sugar, enjoyable brew. Quite a find this from an old antique shop :)

Jado (759) - Camp Hill, AUSTRALIA - APR 4, 2016
500 ml bottle. Dark mahogany brown topped with a sudsy off-white heady that disappears pretty much completely. Aromas of raisins, prunes, orange zest, red wine, dark bread and spices. Taste starts off red wine and dark fruit with a bit of peppery bite. Rich port notes towards the end. Full mouth feel. Definitely a sipper not a quaffer.

Has the bones of a great beer, but seems to be missing that little bit that would get them there, daily disjointed and uneven drinking really.. Disappointing. On the positives, nice aroma, fruity, chocolate and has a nice lingering mouthfeel, bit the middle bit is lacking and I was tempted to say ’thin’

Bottle share thanks to Leighton, 2013 vintage at 7.5%. Very dark reddy orange, clear, small foamy off-white head. Aroma is quite sweet and bready with spice, seeded bread. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is bready, liquorice, sweet sugar syrup, soft finish. Decent.

Bottle split in the Bespin cloud network, thanks to Lando himself, 20/10/15. Chestnut brown / amber with a decent beige covering. Nose is toffee, malt, light honey infuse, biscuit, dark fruit rinds. Taste comprises malt loaf, fruit cake, brown bread, toffee, light spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok but doesn’t pack a lot of depth for the ABV.
