COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is from the Batemans 30 year old Barley Wine recipe and the flavour has been matched with bottles which had been left undiscovered for 31 years only to be found in 2007. The 2012 Vintage was brewed with barleys from a set of unique growing conditions including a prolonged dry period followed by very wet weather, producing grains which impart crisp, dry, rich flavours. It is packed full of succulent malt and after maturing in oak, has flavours of plums, port, malt, brandy, vanilla and almonds

500ml bottle Ď2013 Vintageí (bottle no. 081949) bought at Great Food Hall in Pacific Place, Admiralty.

Looks: Clear deep reddish brown colour; One-quarter finger head and off-white foam which fades in 30 seconds; Small sticky lacing and quite fizzy carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant malt, with moderate roastyness, strong Port wine, light brandy, plum, molasses, barrels and light grass. Vanilla and roasted almond come on as the beer warms.

Taste: Mid to strong sweet full malt, with strong roastyness, nuts, strong caramel, very strong molasses, light syrups, shades of dark cherries, moderate alcohol, toast, biscuits, lemon, and fairly light bitter grassy hops.

Body: Close to light body. Slick and quite oily palate.

Mouth Feel: the malt - sweet and full - with lively roast and nuts also very biscuit and toasty. Lots of strong but kinda well-integrated elements including caramel, molasses, and cherries, all folded in the body without being off-tasted. Very well-made!

Booze: the 7.5% is very Port-like and slightly oily the tongue, give you that barreled, aged winey feel. Its strength is nearly hidden throughout the session. Very nice!

Hoppiness: Light grass in nose; lemon and light grass in taste. Bitterness is low-fi, well-blended with Port / light liquor taste for an abrupt, very low astringent finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry; Pleasantly sweet and winey to mouth.

Comments: My, this is just as good as Fullerís 1845 as an ESA but it has its uniqueness all by its own: full malt, strong oak barrels and subtle hops make it feels like a very scaled down version of Schloss Eggenberg Samichlaus Classic, with drinker-friendly Port-like booze, tastable brandy, red and dark fruits, and just right sweetness. The relatively low abv and barreling did this one a lot of nice, snowy Winter flavours. Easily drinkable without being dangerous, Iíll definitely another one and age it longer for future enjoyment. Wonderful in a civvy kind of way!

Iím kinda riding on this one being grandish...., donít know why exactly! Respect for the brewer? Story it came with? Box it came in? Alcohol kick? The further I go, teh!!
At cellar temperature and into a snifter. Not the most attractive number as far as Old ale/strong ale/ barley wine goes - doesnít fit the bill either way! Straggly bubbles adhere to the sides of the glass. No head; just a lucid, oily liquor that stains a ruby chestnut in colour. Whoa, pronounced rum and raisin nose but raw; there is something dank and ícheap boozeí about this one. Plum pudding our naughty Nanna produced, kind of savoury, fruit mince pie with rounded edges. A lot of roasted nuts, vanillin; it does produce a bouquet more reminiscent of Christmas pudding dough as it is just to be baked. A few lines? Well, at least it is complex!
Dang! I like it. Fruity, plump, viscous, complex, sultry, savoury, bitter/sweet, vinous and oh so like a dram of tawny sherry. This has not lied. Iíd imagine a strong ale of the 70-80ís being flawed by todayís standards, with many respects, and yet this abounds; but to judge!?! Sultanas, prunes in syrup, Moscato, bitter raisins. Lightly buttery, but then it works. Body is medium overall, effective. It is long with a change of field showing roasted and nutty malts; perhaps some red timber. Bitter/sweet with enough harmony. A likeable brew! (50cL, 2013 Vintage, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Appearance: Clear ruby with finger thick ivory head. Aroma: Bread, fruit cake, liquorice, dried fruit, toffee, marzipan. Taste: Low bitterness, low/medium sweet and sourness. Palate: Light/medium grainy texture, light body, average carbonation, abrupt fairly dry, fruity, marzipan, liquorice toffee finish with malty, yeasty notes. Comments: Very good and glass lace. Rating is for 2013 vintage.

Bottle from Terre de Boissons Calais and drunk at home. Clear russet colour with thick lasting beige head. Fruity malty aroma. Yes malty. Some intensity. English peppery hop finish. Is it as good as a Fullers Vintage which I guess is the closest thing to which to compare? No, not quite as good. Not as hoppy or characterful. Itís fine. The malts are fruity and a lot like Soreen malt loaf. Some character some interest. I mean I quite like it. Some yeast character. Chewy malts. Nothing wrong, it just doesnít kick on or have an extra depth. Fine.

Bottle, 2013 vintage. Reddish bronze beer with a strong off white head. The aroma is roasted and malty, and the flavour is strongly malty with bitter and roastedness. Overall a nice strong ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2013 vintage in a 500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Ruby chestnut with little or no head. Aroma is sweet fruity. The flavour is also sweet with dried fruit and burnt treacle. The alcohol has a big hit.

Beer sphere sampled at Classic City Brew Fest 2014. I donít really have tasting notes on this one, except a score and that I would probably not enjoy a full pint of this.
