2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
Grainy, rather boring aroma but a nice dark brown colour with a little white head. Reasonable flavour with roasty hints and some fruitiness followed by a mouth filling zing (or I’d rather say ’zang’) of sweetness. It’s ok but really not very much going on here, as with all bath ales, they can be a ’gateway’ into real decent beer or some might get stuck thinking this is what great beer means...

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A dark looking bitter with a quickly disappearing head. Aroma of toasted and smokey malts and dried fruits. These things come across in the flavour along with a mild sweetness. Not much in the way of hops with this one but still it is nicely bitter on the finnish, A nice bitter

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
(Bottle) Dark, caramel-coloured beer and there’s a lot of caramel in the aroma too, along with malt. Taste is slightly sweeter than I expected but is characterised by the caramel and malt as well, with a bit of hop in the finish. It’s not quite as tasty as I was expecting but it’s still a very drinkable beer.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Pours in clear dark colour with hints of ruby against the light. Foam is low, not lasting. Aroma is malty, roasty, caramel, little bit fruity, plums, raisins. Taste is sweet with low bitterness. Body is medium with light carbonation. Not impressed, could be better from cask.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A dark reddish brown beer with a weak white head. A light nutty malt aroma, slightly spicy with hints of vanilla. Dry mouthfeel. A dry nutty malt flavour, the woody spice comes through again, with a mild vanilla flavour making an appearance! There is a background fruit flavour that adds a lift to the complete flavour. This balanced flavour lasts into the finish.
Tasted at the Salamander, Bath, Somerset.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Lovely red-brown colour, little head retained in pewter. Warm, fruity, malty aroma, sweet. Flavour quite sweet, forest fruit, raisin. Not much hop. Good if you’re after a malty darkish bitter.

Bottle bb 24/04/14. Pours a dark reddy/brown with a very thin head. Pleasant aroma of fruit cake, treacle. It’s medium bodied and sweet. A bit of root bear, treacle, toast, bubblegum, some choc, coke, a hint of lemon. OK.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
My Bottom Line:
Raisins, caramel and light toast merge in this silkiest of Bitters.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam decorates the gorgeous ruby.
-The mouthfeel is divinely malty, at once tight and smooth.
-The flavour profile is not unlike that of a good Polotmavy.
-Bitterness levels are minimal. This one’s all about polished malts.
On cask at The Salamander, Bath.
