Bottle 50cl. Dark brown clear body and small head. Nose dominated by licorice / burned caramel. Generally malty in flavour with aftertaste with caramel and burned malt. Nice beer.

Small offwhite head. Deep dark red body. Faint resiny hop aroma. Deep sweetish resiny wooden malty taste with strong chalky floral hop notes. Soft, smooth, and clean mouthfeel. Dry, smoky, roasty malt aftertaste. Medium body. Wooden, minty taste lingers. Very nice! Impressive for such a light beer. (0.5pt cask at the Museum Tavern.)

Cask conditioned at the Live & Let Live, Frampton Cotterell, S Gloucs 4/5/07. Very dark brown with little head. Aroma of sweet malt with some dark fruit. Flavours of raisin with a hint of toffee, followed by a decent dry finish. Good.

[CASK: The Salisbury Ale House, Manchester 25/11/06] A reasonable bitter but not the best of flavours. OK but not recommended.

UPDATED: MAR 23, 2009 The merchant Fest, Rugby. Rubyish clarity. Slightly sulphurous. Richly buttery malt roastiness. Light but heavy. Bitterly roasty but developing some chocolate smoothness as it warms. Pretty good, but too much headachy toffee sweetness to swig it by the pint 636313 UPDATE Bottle from Warwick Sainsbury’s, out of a plastic cup on the bank with Keith. Excellent damp woodland with slight menthol hop aroma, sprinkle of choc. Clear ruby beer with fine beige lacing. Lingering dunked choccy bic malts and bread, but still lean and slightly biting. Enjoyable, dunkel-like brew despite it having been filtered.

(Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm) Dark brown, mahogany, colour with frothy beige head. Malty nose with fruity notes of wild berries and ripe cherries. Malty taste with berries, chocolate and hints of coffee. Initial malty sweetness gives away for a drier finish with balanced notes of earthy hops. Chewy and smooth mouthfeel. Nice one.

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2012 Cask at The Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading.Wow! A lustrous dark ale with an off-white head; a spicy, malty aroma; creamy, smooth and dry in the mouth with lots of chocolate malt, and pleasantly sour fruity edge; the finish is dry, clean, and genty bitter. Could almost be described as a porter - a marvellous pint whatever you call it though. (6/4/7/3/16=3.6)

Cask, gravity dispensed, at Marlow Donkey, Marlow. Reddish copper with a loose off-white head; earthy aroma; soft, with an earthy malt flavour and a touch of fruity carmael; then a gentle bitterness with some spicy English hops and a dry finish. Very good, again. (6/4/7/3/13=3.3)

Cask handpull at The Guildhall, Folkestone. Very deep ruby colour with thick lasting beige head. Maybe getting towards the end of the barrel as it took a bit of pumping to get the pint, which killed some of the carbonation in the glass. Very nice dark ale though. Juicy dark fruits, plums, but not sour and good choc flavours. Finish is really quite drying. Extremely drinkable. Lovely finish. Choc and ark fruit aroam. Some sweet blackberry. Brilliant pint. Full and rich with a bit of puckering of the mouth on the finish.

Aroma is rich and fruity sweetish malts, fruit cakeish at times, spicey at times. Taste is similarly complex and rich, sweet long finish which reminds me of fullars esb.
