1/2 at the Tilley Stone Gateshead. Very dark mahogany brown with a thin coffee skim on the top. Toffee malt and leather aroma. Coffee, bitter chocolate, liquorice and smoky flavour. Porter, but had brown ale, old ale and premium bitter characteristics. Like BlackHaddock below, I didn’t notice any rum, but I didn’t miss it. Rich, full-bodied and contemplative. Nice warming winter ale.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask in the Babington Arms, Derby. Very deep mahogany with a cream head. i found this to be over sweet with fruity cranberry flavours. The roast malt notes were too much in the background and it felt watery.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hand-pulled pint in the lovely ’Grapes’, A Bath Ales owned pub in Oxford on 22 Nov 13.
Nice dark body, leaning toward black from a dark brown base, on top a tanned crown.
The aroma was spicy and malty with some dark fruit esters thrown in for good measure.
Taste wise it followed the smell nicely, malty molasses giving it a semi-sweet flavour, where was my Rum though? It’s supposed to laced with it I believe. Anyway I enjoyed it and thought it more a ’Winter Warmer’ than any sort of Porter.
Fairly deep and almost rich body, well made and easy to sup.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Interesting nose. Suggests smoky bacon. Savoury with chocolate and cofffee notes.
Quite dark for a porter of this gravity. Orangy red highlights in the glass. Head is virtually non existent. Pretty dull really.

Bottle. Blackish brown beer with a big off white head. The aroma is chocolaty and roasted, and the flavour is bitter and roasted. Overall a nice dark beer.
