Bottle. Nice. Dark dark plum colour. Not too fizzy, actually quite cask-like. Low hoping, earthy, soft, slightly burnt, roasted, toasted, and nice. Beer like what it ’ought ’er be. Dickens and the Artful Dodger would’ve been drinking this stuff. Stuff you’re Imperial IPAs and stuff your Belgium Hodge-Bodgers. This is what’s it’s about (...and I may look back on this post when I’m more sober and wince a bit but I don’t care).

Appearance Very dark brown, ruby edges, frothy head which dissipates to thin layer.
Aroma Dark caramel malts, light coffee and milk chocolate, molasses, hint of toffee.
Taste Malty, some roasted malt, bit of coffee, molassess, toffee, hint of fruit, woody, slight spicy hops.
Palate Soft carb, thin to medium body, smooth. Finish is woody with some butnr crust, lingering light woody bitterness with layer of sweet dark toffee.
Overall Well made porter, quaffable at 5%, good flavour. Must try this cask

on tap - black body with a beige head - lot of smoked malt aroma - also a lot of burned and smoked malt flavour - smokey and the bandit

Slightly sweet smell of burnt malt, smoke and chocolate. The taste is fresh and tangy first and then goes into a taste of malt, coffee and chocolate. A gentle and good beer.

Bottled. A black beer with a short lived beige coloured head. A dry smoky burnt aroma. Similar in the mouth where it’s more fruity. Burnt malts again. Complex and quite tasty.

Tasted thiscracking porter in the Last Post, Paisley (JDW) in March 2008. Cask, handpump dispense. Dark ruby black in colour with a thick creamy white head. Fantastic smooth and intense aroma of smokey roast malt and vanilla pods long in the nose. Rich and creamy mouthfeel. Superb lacing throughout. Dark malts give a complex maltloaf and chocolate cookie flavour with creamy vanilla and mocha notes. Slight prickle of hop resins in the dry aftertaste which fades fast as a very vineous, almost smokey peat note slides through. Finish is seductive, smooth and slightly dry with vanilla cream evident. An excellent porter and my favourite ale from the Bath portfolio. For those that liked the bottle - try the cask!

Taste - watery not the best porter

Bottle, from Waitrose, Lincoln. Jet black, fluffy beige head and moderate condition. Sweet nose with hints of woodiness and vanilla, some tanginess and a touch of butter. Upfront hit of coffee and chocolate in the mouth becoming quite soft with a vanilla woodiness and a touch of hop flower. Low but persistent vanilla and chocolate in the finish.
