A rich aroma of hops and malt develops a full texture in the mouth. It has a long, deep, bitter-sweet finish. Without doubt an exceptional best bitter.

Ingredients: Maris Otter pale malt. Challenger and East Kent Goldings hops.

Absolutely splendid ESB. I look for I. This style maltiness and slippery mouthfeel. Gem has both in spades. Highly recommended.

Pours light amber, slightly hazy. Almost no head. Aroma of hay and herbs. Silky, round mouthfeel. Medium-to-full body, more than usual for an English ale.

Clear reddish brown shading down to light orange at the bottom of the glass; nice fine upright bubbles, little head. Minerally aroma with hints of brown bread. Taste is of strong minerals and brown bread, too. The mouthfeel is a little bit oily. A very solid ale.

Bottle. Pours copper red with a medium thick white head that isn’t long lasting. Roasted malts, almost burnt, caramel, earth, Apple and pass and finally nuts. Flavour is moderately bitter but very short lived. Medium sweetness. Well balanced. Thin to medium bodied with initially good carbonation that fades fast.

Aroma: caramel malts, hints of roasted flavours. Appearance: clear amber, small white head. Taste: light sweet. Palate: caramel sweets continue, light bitters coming up, average-long finish. Overall: decent ESB, nothing too remarkable though. Bottle from Hogs Back Brewery, Tangham.

Bottle at home from waitrose. Colour is rich copper red with a reductant off white head. Aroma is caramel, nutty malt and twigs with a slight apple note. Flavour is rich layered malty goodness. Nutty, caramel and biscuit, hops are mellow and earthy. Palate is very good, medium body that melts on the tongue. Tasty malt forward beer.
