COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned. Also available in cask at 4.1%. Ratings for the cask version should be entered under Bath Gem (cask)

A rich aroma of hops and malt develops a full texture in the mouth. It has a long, deep, bitter-sweet finish. Without doubt an exceptional best bitter.

Ingredients: Maris Otter pale malt. Challenger and East Kent Goldings hops.

An enjoyable bitter that I could just drink and drink. Very mild, with a faint hint of hops. Pretty bottle (see photo I took). Interesting lack of head no matter how hard you pour. Typical UK malt flavor that's not found in US beers - you get used to it.

Pours deep amber, no head; sweet, but not excessively so; some dark fruit; balanced, with a bittersweet finish; a charming if modest gem.

Jan 2007: I think Bath Ales produce fantastic beers, so when I came across this 500ml brown bottle, locally, I had to get it. I wasn’t dissappointed. Looked fine in a Gordon’s thistle glass, amber, with a good head. I was not expecting the bannana, vanilla, sweet caramel aroma. You do not get it with the cask version. No taste of the above aroma, thank God, although it is fairly sweet for a Brit bitter. Mouthfeel is fine, the flavour stays and a bitterness does arrive, but you have to wait for it. I prefer the cask, but this is still a good beer.

[Bottle from Muddy Wellies’ stall at Cirencester Christmas Market] Deep amber with a moderate, off-white head. Rather fizzy. Sulphurous, farmyard flavour. Not to my taste, I’m afraid.

[Bottle from Mum & Dad, shared with Jim - cheers!] Amber with a small white head and soft carbonation. Tastes quite sweet, with lots of caramel and vanilla. Smooth, easy drinking and a little different to your average English ale; just a smidgeon of bitterness in the aftertaste. Pleasant enough, but unremarkable. c6
