3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 jgb9348 (3491) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - JAN 20, 2012
Hazy, deep amber coloured body with a ruby glow and large tan head. Aroma of coriander seed, flowers, light spice, a touch of malt, a little sugar and the noticeable yeast usually shown in JP beers. Medium-bodied; Malty flavour with quite a bit of floral notes, some subdued sweetness and a pungent and perhaps too strong spiciness. Aftertaste shows some alcohol, a touch of the yeast and a sour quality, but the spices really show through. Overall, a nice beer for sure, but not as great as I expected - perhaps too high of expectations. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Bottle: Breaking in new passion, new noise. Hazy red-orange beer with a funky off-white head. Flowery, lightly tart, perfumery aroma with notes of rose hips, hibiscus, horse saddle. Taste is sweet, slightly tart, flowery, light bitter. Breaking in new passion, new noise. Well made, all though not exactly revolutionary.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Savvy1982 (1439) - Lethbridge, Alberta, CANADA - DEC 31, 2011
Bottle at home, out of my trusty old Maudite glass. Pours murky tawny, with medium to thick off-white head; spotty to quite good lacing. Nose is very funky: lots of cheesy horse and vinegar, along with a fair measure of tart fruit. Flavours are funky without being aggressively tart, lots going on here: clearly herbal but I wouldn’t speak to being able to pick out rose hips or hibiscus. Again some tart fruit; good, quite good.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 slimchill (980) - Austin, Texas, USA - DEC 28, 2011
Bottle. Pours a beautiful bright pink with active carbonation to a big, fluffy head with great lacing. Sweet fruit and floral notes. Strawberry, cherry, rose, hibiscus, light spice. Dry but with hints of sweetness. Beautiful balance and depth. Opens with a bit of brettanomyces and spice, but then folds into light fruit and floral tones, then a bone dry, slightly rubbery finish with more spice. Light alcohol afterwards. Very well-brewed and especially well-fermented.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Fred82 (1824) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 28, 2011
750ml bottle thanks to jprime.
Appearance : Clear amber with big white foamy had. Extensive lacing. Long head retention.
Aroma : Nice funky brett with light tartness. Nice fruits. Light wood, light floral notes. Big floral notes as it warms up. Big barnyard, earthy, humid notes. Nice !
Taste : Big brett with fruity notes. Light citrusy tartness with dry brett-y finish. Long finish with nice tartness, nice brett and nice fruity notes. Light astringency on the finish. Light floral notes too.
Palate : Soft carbonation, medium body leading to a dry finish. Really nice. Carbonation falls a bit short especially for the style. Not really the mouthfeel of a Saison.
Overall : Some say they don’t get the JP signature in there but I surely do. Maybe not as intense but it’s there. Nice light tartness, nice light brett. Great funky nose. Really enjoyable, nicely complex. Great beer.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 wedgie9 (1441) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - DEC 16, 2011
Tasted on 12/16/11 from a blue capped 750mL bottle, this one has been in the cellar for over a year. Pours a hazy burnt orange with a thick, rocky, beige head that recedes rather quickly, to thick lace, leaving some residue along the inside of the glass. The nose is dry and spicy hibiscus, with the a lightly sour aroma, floral rose, some hay and cereal malt, and the funky, earthy barnyard that I have grown to associate with Jolly Pumpkin. The flavor is just as spicy, with the hibiscus and floral notes coming through even more than the nose. It is extremely dry, with a light flavor of dried apricot, a hint of white peppercorn, some sourness and bitterness, and a ton of Jolly Pumpkin funk. The body is medium with lively, stinging, almost sparkling carbonation, and a long, lightly sour, spicy hibiscus, and super funky finish.
