COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hard Times Belgian Farmhouse Ale A unique interpretation of a classic Saison. Up front, there are peppery and citrusy notes that slowly give way to more sublime spice and fruit characters. Refreshing and somewhat dry, the melange of spices, especially the addition of sassafras root, give Hard Times a very complex profile. 4.5% ABV. Hard Times Ale is a reflection of the tough economic times we all face. Inspired by our own limited funds, the grain recipe was put together from leftover malts from previous recipes, the yeast was borrowed from Bullfrog Brewery and spices were procured from Williamsport’s Freshlife Market.

Draft: Poured an amber color with a white head. The aroma was spice and yeast. The flavor was un-balanced and complex. Vanilla, earth, yeast and spice was present. Overall, not good

From a saved growler, at the brewpub. They take some off every month or so to see how it ages. Definate barnyard smell to this. Reddish colour, lacey. Hits the style with some spiciness, drying.Average mouthfeel. With the pepper, without anything catchy or interesting, its like a homebrewing experiment.

Pours a slightly cloudy amber/orange color with some nice golden orange hues when held to a light source and a 1.5 foam white head that quickly settles into a lasting cap. Minimal lacing. Peppery spicy aroma with some bready yeast notes and a slightly earthy funky. Subtle oak/vanilla and light crisp fruit. Slightly earthy mouthfeel with slight crisp carbonation and spicy pepper. Bready yeast and slight crisp light fruit notes, mostly apple and pear. There is a slight alcohol astringency in the dry finish.

On tap at the brewery tasting room. Pours a copper-red-amber, hazed, with a soapy off-white head. Aroma was pungently spiced and yeast-messy, a little sickly. Flavor was just weird. A punchy, harsh blast of mingled spices that were hard to discern, then a musky bark or woody plant character. Some overly sugary malts, some spice bitterness, a touch of esters. Confusion and messiness mostly. Complex in a bad way. Weird.

Draught at Capone’s: Aroma of spices and pumpernickel. Poured amber/brown in color with a small, dense, off-white head that lasted throughout. Hazy. Very sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet. Tastes of cocoa, yeast, and spices. Light body. Thin texture. Soft to average carbonation. Yeast and spice finish. Not good.
