2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 GAManiac (1905) - Atlanta, USA - JAN 10, 2010
22oz bomber courtesy of barleydine poured into a tulip.
Pours an extremely dark brown that borders on black with a small creamy tan head that leaves some delicate lacing and sits as a thin cap for a while.
The aroma is sweet with some milk chocolate, caramel and vanilla dominating. There is heavily roasted black malt presence as well as a faint bitterness that’s half coffee and half sourness.
The taste has a much more pronounced bitterness and actually has more sourness than the aroma. It’s still fairly sweet with milk chocolate and vanilla coming through on top of the roasted malts. The finish brings back the slightly distracting sourness and an espresso bitterness.
The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and maybe a tad thin with moderate carbonation.
This is a decent stout though I think it’s starting to turn, possibly infected? I don’t think the sourness is intended, but it’s definitely there and takes away from the overall experience.

Stygian black body with lush, burnt caramel colored top. Appealing dry roasty nose with sprinkles of coffee. Easy drinking dry roast barley body. A bit underbodied for a stout, but mildly pleasant and quaffable. Note the most complex of stouts, but I enjoyed this.

1.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20 FROTHINGSLOSH (3381) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 17, 2010
Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a large dark brown head. The aroma was bitter and roasty with undertones of coffee and cocoa. The flavor was dry, bitter and sour with some coffee and roasted malt but there was an omnipresent element of coffee flavored battery acid that made this one a solid drain pour.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DocLock (5966) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 16, 2010

Tap at Whole Foods, Plymouth Meeting. Pours a deep almost black with a medium bubbly/creamy tan head. Aroma of sweet cherries, chocolate, caramel and some roasted malt. Flavor of cherries, chocolate, nuts, caramel, roasted malt and some hop bitterness. Starts a little sweet but dries in the finish.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Brigadier (1937) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - FEB 12, 2010
650 ml bottle
A run of the mill oatmeal stout this is indicative of a brewery trying something basic and doing just enough to get by. I still intend to check out this place if I ever find myself in the neighborhood but this dampens my enthusiasm somewhat. Still not every little brewery can be a gem so perhaps I should temper my expectations accordingly.
Aroma / Appearance - The thin watery body was limp and weak for a stout. Even something as low as 6% should be more assertive. The blend of oatmeal and chocolate was marred by a green taste as if this particular batch was bottled too soon.
Flavor / Palate - Oatmeal, malt, and chocolate come along grudgingly but the main characteristic is a freshness like that present in beers bottled before they were ready. The smoky finish was top notch however. Depending on the price I’d call this a reasonable buy but I would not travel out of my way just for this.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 kkearn (1163) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 18, 2010
22oz bottle. Pours deep brown, capped with a medium sized brown head. Aroma is fairly sweet, with milk chocolate, sugar and coffee. Reminiscent of coffee with too much sugar. Coffee and vanilla are primary flavors, with milk chocolate and some ash in the background. Flavor is similar the aroma, but not quite as sweet. Mouthfeel is thin, with a bit of salty character. Really easy to drink, but I was hoping for something a bit more substantial.
