COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark ale, fermented in the bottle.
Inspired by a Breughel painting, “The Flemish Proverbs” (1559), in which several Flemish proverbs are depicted amongst which is the expression "He’s a pilaarbijter" ("pillar biter"), which means, ’He’s a hypocritical man.’

Bottle from Belgian Beer Station. Pilaarbijter Bruin has a hazy, orange brown color with lots of floaties. The creamy head is beige and abundant. It slowly leaves a nice lacing on the elegant Pilaarbijter glass. The aroma is dominated by roasted malts with a touch of tart and spicyness (cloves). Not really complex but not bad. Tasting the beer is not surprising at all: more roasted malts, sweetness upfront and some bitterness in the rather long aftertaste. The syruppy mouthfeel and roasted taste make me think of a stout, certainly considering the very low level of carbonation.

Tap @ Vlaamsche Reus, Wageningen. Brown beer again. A lot of banana in the aroma. Banana is all over in the taste. Very smooth beer with a dry finish. Sweet. Overall it’s a lot of banana when I think of this one. Easy going Abbey Dubbel. Good.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Hogerdijk, Culemborg. Clear red brown with a big beige head. Caramel aroma with some dark fruits. Nice bittersweet caramel flavour. Aftertaste is a bit shortlived but all in all it’s a nice dubbel.

Bottle with best before of 23/12/13 to Chimay trappist glass...

Aroma: Caramel, toasted/roasted malts, fruits, spices, smells a little hot for the percentage. Slight sour/funk going on as well.

Appearance: Slightly cloudy burgundy red color, huge tan head.

Taste: Sour, bitterness, burnt caramel, spices.

Palate: Quite subtle flavours but there’s a slight mouth puckering sensation going on, tastes kinda tannic like a red. Extremely carbonated, I’d say excessive for the style and it’s kinda hot as the aroma indicated. Overall though the good outshines the bad.

Overall: Solid beer, nothing groundbreaking but it’s still an enjoyable brew. 6.5% huh? It gets you a little more hagged than you’d think....makes me wonder.

On tap. Clear medium brown with a fizzy off white head. Sweet, malty, toffee and molasses aroma and taste with light banana and bubble gum on the back end and coffee notes throughout. Not bad.
