TAR (1998), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Mar 29, 2008 Whitewashed yellow. Creamy white ring of head surrounds a scattered center. Simple nose consists of stewed apples, mildly tart lactic adic and a whisper of straw-tinged malt and plastic. Soft carbonation washes over the palate. Nutty yeast sweetness matches that of the slightly grainy Pils malt which evokes thoughts of water crackers and straw. Some doughiness is present. Well-rounded seltzery acidity teases the palate but never buckles the cheeks. Not overly quenching or cleansing as a result of the relatively low acidity. Little in the way of esters, with the exception of a soft melon and peachy fruitiness which happens to be quite bright and complementary to the lactic acid. Late emergence of vibrant wheat echoes the mild tang derived from yeast. Finishes dryish with a rosewater softness yet with some chalkiness and toasted cracker maltiness which virtually scrubs the palate with its intense graininess. A bit simple and unchallenging, but undoubtedly would serve as a great introductory to the style.
pnista (884), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Aug 20, 2008 Pours a sickly lightly hazed light yellow with a big old loose white head, when I pour carefully. Adding yeast, and the color is an unearthly yellow glow. The nose is slightly grainy, slightly wheaty, not a ton of character. Maybe a bit sweet and ever so slightly acidic. Maybe slightly vegetal. Light fluffy lively body. Higher carbonation. The flavor is very wheaty, especially in the finish. A bit of initial acidity and slight tartness, but nothing particularly crazy. Maybe a hint of lacto, but not much. Bummer. A little bit of lemon in the start of the finish, but the wheaty grain flavors just drag this down from the refreshment it should be. Maybe a touch of astringency left in the mouth. KnN (253), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Aug 19, 2008 Pours a light lemonade yellow with just a little bit of have. Aroma is pretty uninspiring. A little bit of citrus maybe and a touch of malt, but not much there.
This beer’s description is spot on; it’s definitely a more mellow version of the Berliner-Weisse style. So mellow that it loses any real semblance of flavor. It’s not bad, but there’s nothing here that really pops, and that’s more of what I’d expect from this style. illidurit (387), Santa Cruz, California, USA Aug 16, 2008 11.2 oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Palest beer I’ve ever seen, including some macros. A cloudy shade of banana pith with a bright white head that fizzes up to 2 fingers before settling at a moderate pace, leaving very little lace.
Aroma is clearly wheaty, with the classic banana ester character. However there’s a touch of tartness as well.
Flavor is tart lemony citrus and a touch of lactic acid. The banana is very subdued but detectable.
Carbonation is actually a little too low here, resulting in a less-than-optimal palate. Sticky and not very crisp for a style that’s intended to be refreshing. Body is as thin as can be, making this quite drinkable. fonefan (4328), Ulfborg, Denmark Aug 13, 2008 Bottle 33cl @ Home. Unclear light yellow close to white color with a large, frothy, good lancing, fully lasting, white head. Aroma is light to moderate malty, sour, warm brakes from a racing car just arrived in the pit, light to moderate hoppy, lime, light yeast, soap. Flavor is moderate sweet, light to moderate acidic and bitter with some sourness a average duration. Body is light, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. (070608) jazz88 (2202), San Francisco, California, USA Aug 13, 2008 Bottle. I’m so excited to finally try this style of beer after 2,200 beer ratings. An almost clear yellow color with a laced white head. A yeasty, bread and slight musty aroma. There was a sharp citrus tang on the palate at first but it quickly subsides. Lemon flavors throughout.
