COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Huguenots may have originated the style as they traveled through France to Flanders, having first mentioned it in the 1600s. During their time, there were said to be seven hundred weissbier breweries in Berlin. Later, in 1809, Napoleon and his troops identified Berliner Weisse as the Champagne of the North. He requested the beer be served w/syrup to cut its extreme level of acidity. Bayrischer Bahnhof’s interpretation is a slightly softer, more mellow version of the “Berliner Weisse” style with a beautiful balance of tartness, fruitness, and sweetness.

Tap. Pours a pale yellow with lots of head although I did not sense that it was overly carbonated. Nose is lightly citric. Flavor is by no means overly acidic and can be enjoyed without the addition of a sweet syrup. I had it both ways and although I usually enjoy it with the woodruff syrup, this was nicer without. A tart, refreshing, light summertime brew with low alcohol that you can keep on sipping and chatting.

Bottle: Pours a hazy gold with a white head. Aroma, light yeasty notes, lemon zest, bready notes, tart. Flavor, lemons, tart, almost cider like in some ways, yeasty, doughy notes, finishes dry with a light tartness. Pretty good.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2007 Pours very lightly clouded, body the color of straw, with a frothy white head that is slowly and mostly diminishing. Looks like a chill-hazed, thicker macro brew, but is not unpleasant in appearance in any way. The aroma is heavily wheaty and plenty fruity, with notes of lemon and orange peel. Tartness and acidity are eluded to upon first whiff. The yeast and grain character is rigid and appetizing. Hints of detergent spill over the edge of the glass as the beer achieves cellar temperature. Biscuity malt is refined and only lightly earthy. The flavor is immdeiately tart and very balanced between sweet notes and pleasant medium-high acidity. This is certainly a quenching and unique taste profile. The citron taste is fantastic and very satisfying, really bringing a whole new dimension to this ever-challenging style. Sweetness, tartness, acidity and fruit notes are all moderate, but this has a light, airy quality and a soft, pleasant, well-carbonated and easygoing mouthfeel. The finish is tart, with a touch of tooth enamel-shredding acidic oiliness lingering, as well as light yeast notes with a touch of peppery spice, just a touch. Very good, surprisingly satisfying and something that I’ll be enjoying again very soon. I think this brewery is great.

Courtesy of Degarth. Pours an odd hazy straw to white paper with white head. The aroma is a light mildly lemony tartness flavor with the addition of some funk. The taste has an up front tart bite that is tempered with a mild wheat malt. It ends mildly tart and watery with thin shots of funk here and there. Refreshing hot weather brew.

bottle. Hazy pale yellow, huge fizzy head, quickly collapsing. Sour aroma. Sour overall impression, but not as sour as other examples of the style. There are really good fruit flavours detectable, such as mango, papaya and other tropical fruit. The sourness doesn’t overpower other flavours, which also adds to a quite good drinkability.

Sweet and sharp light malt aroma. Hazy golden color with a small white head. Light amount of fine dark brown sediment. Lightly sweet with a tart apple bitterness. Sweetness fades quickly while the tanginess last well into the end.

Nice one. I love this style and wish I could find more. This was a little weaker than I was hoping for but still great. Aroma of wheat and lemon. Pour was beautiful. A very light gold (almost white) with swirling heavy sediment. Not floaters but what can only be described as a shampoo like goopiness floating in the middle. Taste was nice and tart with a lot of yeast and lemon. Great carbonation. Nice dry aftertaste with the sour citrus staying in the back of the throat.

Bought and tasted at the Pizza Port bottle shop with Brad. I’ve been eager to try a Berliner Weisse after reading much about how to make sour beers. Cloudy pale light yellow color. Lemony sour aroma is very mild. A little phenolic aroma from the yeast. Easy to drink. Nice session pizza beer.

Bottle from Vendome NoHo. They have a few of these, and from the taste they are old. Not bad, just old. Nose of oxidized German grains, wheat, candi sugar. Color is a bright yellow with decent fluffy white head. Flavor is woefully round and un-sharp: caramel, lemon zest, mild tart all mixed in a Hefe type flavor.

tart apple, vinegar and slightly yeasty aroma. Cloudy straw pour. Crisp bite of sourness at the front end. Light body with some fruit, pear and granny smith. Refreshing beer on a hot day. Light but it is supposed to be. Very nice beer.
