Maria (5494), Thisted, Denmark Oct 2, 2008 Draught at the brewpub. It’s a black/brown beer with a creamy head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, caramel and coffee. The flavour has notes of roasted malt, coffee, dry citrus and caramel. The body, balance and harmony in this beer is outstanding, and it’s the best schwarzbier I ever had, truly nice! I could drink a lot more of this stuff, than I did that nice evening in the beginning of September 2008, but the next morning I were glad I didn’t ;) DSG (1330), Tel Aviv, Israel Aug 8, 2008 (6/22/08) Draught at Gasthaus & Gosebrauerei Bayerischer Bahnhof in Leipzig. Black color with a medium beige-light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, some coffee and vanilla hints. Sweet and roasty flavor with some caramel and some coffee. Medium-bodied. kappldav123 (1567), Markkleeberg, Germany Jan 12, 2008 On tap at the brewery. The aroma is very malty, smoky. The flavor is malty, quite monotonous. The beer is somehow boring. OldMrCrow (1127), Seattle, Washington, USA Nov 26, 2007 Draft at the brewery.
Pours dark dark black with a light tan head. Mellow roasty nose, burnt coffee, roasty grain, and apple in the flavor, thin mouthfeel. It’s a nice beer, but I just keep thinking about the gose... larsga (2772), Oslo, Norway Oct 14, 2006 Medium beige creamy head with larger bubbles. Opaque black body goes dark hazy brown at the edges. Light peppery, caramelly aroma. Taste is light, clean, roasty malts with burnt notes. Some caramel. Smooth, velvety. Dry aftertaste. Very nice. (0.3l on tap.) strings (344), Sydney, Australia Oct 8, 2006 On tap at Bayerischer Bahnhof. A bit unfair perhaps because I’m not much of a schwarzbier fan, especially that dry burnt coffee aftertaste. Had that bad combination of wateriness and intense flavour that just makes me wish I was drinking a good stout or porter. EithCubes (2037), Indiana, USA Jun 12, 2006 Tap in the Biergarten. Opaque dark, barely ruby under sunlight. Rich, full, lacing light brown head. Smells of coffee, toffee, and roasted dark malts. Great roasty taste, though it’s weak enough to warrant comparisons with a dunkel, and the around-the-edges taste reminds me of a washing machine. Don’t ask. Thicker than many Schwarzbiere, but true to style in the most important aspect - mildness. Velvety smooth, pleasant with a dull, long, and choco-coffee aftertaste. Touch of sourness adds a nice note. Indeterminate spiciness. Süffig! rpattinson (83), Amsterdam, Netherlands Oct 7, 2005 Chicory, hop, coffee, grass and burnt aroma; bitterish taste with coffee, basil, grass and citrus aromas; a very long bitter finish with coffee, cream and malt aromas.
A very good espresso-flavoured schwarzbier. An excellent mixture of both hop and malt bitterness.
