75ml bottle. It pours a cidre-like unfiltered amber brown with a frothy off-white head. The smell is very nice. Woody with ample oak to it, vanilla, caramel, and a nice bit of herbal noble hops. The flavor is slightly tart with a nice sweetness and a lingering medium bitterness. Oak is prevalent as well as bread and caramel. It reminds me of a Uerige sticke that I had on draft once that was sligthly tart.

draft @ redlight redlight. Caramel malts on the nose with creamy vanilla aromas. Pours an orange amber with a dense white head. Smooth creamy mouthfeel, with an earthy bitterness with grassy notes with vanilla oak tanins in the finish. Nice, not overly oaky. Solid beer.

Capped 750 (fat bottom Italian style) from Monument in Concord, CA. Pours hazy med dark orange/amber with a creamy/frothy beige head. Aroma is fruity, lightly toast malt, and a suggestion of wood. Med + body. Carb is sharpish. Flavor is fruity, lightly toast malt, with some woody astringency. It’s something of a contradiction. It seems dry and bitter, then it seems mildly sweet and not all that bitter. Finishes fruity, malt and a little woody. Consistent in that anyway. Very tasty.

Tap at Max’s. Pours a light woody brown, slight haze thin head. Aroma is big caramel, toast, biscuit, light burnt slight smokey hint with woody, ashy notes and full malt- low hops. Flavor is good full toasted malts, biscuit, munich sweetness, toffee, burnt sugar, some slight smoke, oak, and burnt notes with a slight whiskey hint from the oak. Smooth body. I liked this one quite a bit more than the Porter.

Bottle last night, a slender 1pt, 9.4 ounce version. Nose tart with a strong woody barrel element, reminds faintly of lambic/gueuze, or at least isn’t crushed by American vanilla/oak overtones (which are absent here). Pours a deep, hazy reddish orange with a short-lived off-white head. Taste is gentle and tart with mild but lasting and effective bitterness, touch of astringency. Heaviest flavor comes from the stark woodiness, but again, this is noble essence of wood rather than "barrel bomb". Fruit is very, very faint, the closest we come is a touch of white grape with saffron and chamomile. Smooth, gaining spice (brief ... coriander?) and subtle yeast that peaks in the finish/aftertaste but which seems necessary here. Fullish body, splash of alcohol but everything’s under control, move along, nothing to see here. The idea is relatively simple (though not in the German community!) but the execution is brilliant and the marriage of elements is harmonious and spiritually balanced.

Bottle - 750 mL crowned. Label shows 6.8% ABV. Copper pour with a short tan head. Aroma is oak, caramel, sweet malt, and toasted bread. Taste is big oak, grains, toasted malt, caramel, soft fruit and faint vanilla. Body is medium with soft, bubbly carbonation and moderate chewiness. Ends with more toasted malt, oak, grains, sweet malt, caramel and fruit notes.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, cookie, bread), lightly to moderately hoppy (apricot, flowers), with light notes of honey and peach. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Quite pleasant, if perhaps a bit simple. Better carbonation would help the mouth experience, but in general the aroma and flavor balance are both solid and enjoyable. I don’t get any of the oak in this, but that’s ok since the chipping effect is usually raw and crude anyway.
