11.2oz bottle. This one poured all head and I mean all head. Took a while to settle down to a black color. Funky, roasty, chocolate, and a touch of coffee. Just wish I didn’t lose 3/4 the bottle to a foaming mess.

(Rating #4719)

Rastacouere (6045) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 18, 2013
Enormous tan head resulting from the very intense, exagerated carbonation. As it settles down, the rocky formation creates all kinds of mountainous shapes and are a delight to the eyes. Despite the scarily overcarbonated looks, the aromas are all there, intensely perfumy and confident, throwing bold and focused chocolate screams completed by spicy, flowery, leathery, gently medicinal phenolic compounds. A delicious smoke veil envelops the palate. Despite the vigorous carbonation, the palate remains round and with an agreeable oily touch.Roasted grains do creep up in the second half, alluding to pumpernickel bread and rubbery phenols. Long-lasting chocolate and smoke finish, in dryness all throughout. Subtle alcohol touch, sweetening the ensemble. Either the bottles are very variable of my fellow colleagues are very tough on this beer. I found it marvellous and an enormous surprise: a dark brett beer from Germany? That would have been original and creative anywhere! Although it must be said that Bahnhof has been most interesting lately with its Brett experiments. I sure hope they keep it up.

My bottle didn’t gush quickly, but it was a long, slow gusher that kept foaming and foaming for ten minutes. But I managed to pour it off, and what I found was a very delicious beer, with warming chocolate notes and an undertone of sausage/smoke. Very dark brown color and obviously, a lot (a LOT) of head. Good beer. Bottle.

33 cl bottle @ home (8.5%!). Beer came gushing out of the bottle, but I was warned, so I didn’t lose much and poured it into a big glass. Black color. Big beige head, fair lace. Aroma’s of brett, funk, tartness, roast. Flavor is actually OK, chocolatey sweet, some tartness, roast and light bitterness. Medium bodied. Finishes better than it starts, medium bitter, roasted. Not too bad for a brett beer.

This was supposed to be great. What happened? Black pour tan head. Aroma is skunky chocolate. Taste is the same but worse. In defense of this beer, there must have neen something wrong with this bottle. Lost about 80% as it exploded when opened.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a large bright brown color head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of roasted malt with loads of black chocolate notes. Taste is dominated by dry roasted malt with loads of rich black chocolates notes with very light Brett notes also noticeable. Body is full with really nice creamy texture with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I really enjoyed that one with nice creamy black chocolate notes but I can’t say that the Brett notes were very intense or easily identifiable.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. As Porticus Leipziger Doppel-Porter, ABV is 8.5% according to the label. Different beer? Almost black colour, big fluffy and rocky light-beige head. Aroma is tart, lots of Brettanomyces funk, light salty, salty liquorice, hint of cinnamon, hard roasted malts, light fruity. Flavour is medium sweet, chocolate, hard roasted malts, light tart Brett, coffee, liquorice, caramel, light funky bitter finish. Medium-bodied, lots of carbonation.

330ml bottle from IPB.
Appearance : Black with big foamy head. Long head retention.
Aroma : Brett upfront surrounded by roasted malt. Some coffee, dark fruits, leather, chocolate. quite complex.
Taste : Roasted malt with horsey brett notes. Finish coffee and chocolate with some brett. Light acidity.
Palate : A bit fizzy but it’s to be expected with the brett.
Overall : Quite a nice surprise. Very nice mix of the brett in this style. I’ve had other brett porter/stouts that were not as well brewed as this one. Nice rich and complex nose with a nice complex taste. Finish had a nice persistency with some lingering brett notes. Really nice stuff.
