33cl bottle pours a watery, opaque black with a very active, frothy, rocky tan head. Aroma is a interesting mix of dark malts, chocolate, toasted bread, wood pulp, dandelions, dusty rafters. Flavor is similar, chocolate, dark whole grain bread, stale malts, yeast, bitter greens like arugula, leafy veg. The finish is dry, medium bodied and has a lasting chocolate roastiness. It’s an infected porter, not much else to say. It’s good, but I wouldn’t seek this out again.

Tap special at WWBA ’12 Brooklyn. Fucken weird. Bretty with dirt notes. Astringent finish of rubbing alcohol and resin. Plenty of coffee. Not a fan at all.

I was looking forward to this.. but I picked up the bottle and the cap shot off, immediately followed by 90% of the beer.. rating the 10% here. Poured medium-deep brown with most of a glass full of beige head. The aroma picked up an odd blend of funky Brett, smoked malts, and well-roasted chocolate.. the warm malts somehow struck a fine balance against the funk.. more smoke when you breathe really deeply.. weird, but intriguing. The flavor found more fruit and oaky funk than anything else.. warm black malts and roasted coffee at the core.. tacky finish with strange fruit and footy funk (sorry to keep using that word, but I’ve got nothing better). Medium-bodied and slick on the palate by the time I was able to drink it.. I’d like to try it again but I just bought it, it basically exploded, and it wasn’t cheap.. so it probably won’t happen.

Tap at Gingerman. What a strange beer. There is a strange yeast note, most certainly the brett, but it doesn’t feel like brett at all. Dry, dynamic, slightly slightly caramel body. Spoiled milk notes. It’s... ok.

TAP: Pour took 1/2 hr to create as the beer was really heady. The pour had a tan head that stood proudly atop this dark/black beer and left great lacing. Aroma of smoke, brett and baccon. Taste is of soy, roast and brett. Thin-medium body.

Date: April 10, 2012 Mode: Tap Source: Happy Gnome Description: Opaque dark pour with huge head and lacing, best part of this beer. Aroma was roasted malt, brett and some smoked bacon. Taste was consistent with aroma, but brett was not as strong as in aroma. Thin to medium bodied which I wasn’t expecting.

Tap. Awesome extremely dark pour with a friggin monster head with great lacing. Nose is slight roast and edamame, with some smoke. Moderate to slightly lighter palate. Taste is sugary edamame with a bit of roast and lactose. Brett comes out as it warms.

On draft at the Local Beer Bar in Eureka, CA. Came in the glass a dark brown with a light tan head that left minimal lacing. Nose shows a lot of roasted malts with dark ripe fruit. Medium in body with a rich mouthfeel. Flavor is again the dark roast with a dry bitter finish. Good.

Draft at Monks. Pours very dark brown with a tan head that dissipates quickly. Medium thick body. Heavy dark malt flavors. Dark chocolate dryness, especially in the finish. The Brett is certainly present but seems superfluous. Doesn’t seem to meld well with the malt in this one. May have to try again to see if it sits better next time.

Bottle from Total Wine, Sacramento. I had to use 2 glasses as the head would not stop flowing out of the bottle. Once it settled, I discovered a nearly black liquid with a massive tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a thick dark molasses flavor with some anise and a fruity finish, probably from the brett. Overall, a pretty tasty brew, but an extreme version of this style.
