Commercial Description:
Leipziger Gose is a top-fermenting wheat beer {60% wheat, 40% barley malt} with coriander, salt, and lactic acid bacteria added in the boil. It is a 4.6% alc/vol eclectic beer whose name evokes a close relationship to the renowned Lambic/Geuze breweries in the Valley Senne nearby Brussels, Belgium.

Draft on tap at the Bavarian Lodge (Lisle, IL). Pours a hazy straw, pale yellow with a creamy offwhite moderate head that cakes and laces pretty well. Aromas are throw a light dose of coriander and sour grain, wheat with a decent dose of sodium, a touch of lemon covered up by salt and sourness, the lactic acid is a bit stinky, but exciting. A touch spicy with a bit of fruity crab apple, initial throws a very light beer, lightly sour with lemon, coriander, and grainy malts beneath, flaked wheat is delicate, some herbs and a touch of spice, this is very smooth and creamy on the palate, light flavors, gets a bit more tart as I delve into it, the lactic really starts to get a footing. Not quite as enjoyable as a Berliner Weiss, but on the right track. This beer grabs a better hold on me as I get further into it. Very drinkable, the flavors are delicate, the beer is more enjoyable than I thought it would be upon initial.

11.2 bottle from Sergio’s. Sergio told me it was a Berliner Weisse. Clear copper golden color with a nice creamy head that fades pretty quick. Tart dry aroma reminiscent slightly of white wine. Some sweet fruity notes too. The flavor is nice and soft and subtle, but just not sour, like a berliner weisse. Very refreshing and poundable thoguh. A bit if a cereal note in the background. Just a smooth easy going beer. Smooth and light on the palate, but still somehow robust... I don’t know how to describe it really. Overall: I would love this to be cheaper and available fresh, and it would be an easy go-to beer.

Murky yellow color, thin white head with moderate lacing. Lightly funky nose with some wheat, banana, and corriander. Flavor is very wheaty and citrus dominated, again some light funk, and a faint sea salt note. The salt softens the palate and finish, creating a light, refreshing beer that has no sting despite it being appropriately carbonated. And it’s insanely drinkable.

11.2 oz bottle (didn’t feel like investing in the large one pictured). Pours with a very large, creamy white head and a murky yellow body. Head is long lasting with some lace. Aroma is quite floral, with coriander, honey, salt, rosemary, lavender and light citrus (lemon and orange peel). Aroma reminds me of a slightly salty witbier. Taste is salty, citric sour, light lactic, coriander and wheat. Interesting to say the least, and quite nice. Refreshing. Lively bubbles, finishes decently dry.

Bottle (shared with Angeloregon)... Poured golden/yellow with a white head. Nose was grassy and earthy with a fresh lemon/citrus tone to it. Very refreshing. You can’t really taste the salt, but it adds a certain edge and dryness to the beer. Flavors of yeast, malts, and citrus-like fruits with a tart, acidic finish. Why isn’t this style more popular. Glad some Portland breweries are messing with Goses.

A: Pours a pale piss yellow. Nice fluffy white head. Very good retention and lots of lace for such a light bodied brew. S: Wheat, lemon grass, yeast, and a hint of warm piss. T: No piss which is a good thing. Citric for sure, the wheat is there with a hint of yeasty bread. M: Pretty light, crisp, and clean. D: So So, not my favorite of styles.

Bottle. Unclear yellow with a medium white head. Coriander, spice, citrus and lime in aroma. The flavour is light sour, coriander and wheat. Interesting.
