This original Leipzig beer specialty lends us the name for our brewery. Gose is a regional beer specialty that was brought to Saxony-Anhalt in the year 1738. Originally Gose comes from Goslar, a small town in Lower Saxony, and the river “Gose” in this town. This beer specialty has a refreshing, slightly sour taste and is ideal for quenching your thirst. Gose is brewed with the additional ingredients lactic acid, cilantro, and salt. Gose is a top-fermented beer with 4,5 Vol. % alcohol and 10,8 % wort. You can enjoy it in different variations.

Bottle from Gulating, Larvik. Pours almost clear golden with a small creamy white head. Aroma is citric fruity with fresh limonade. Taste is refreshing, mild lemon, weak acidic and salty with a short aftertaste. Thin bodied, high carbonated. Yes, this was a nice Gose.

Leipziger Gose is an original old school, traditional gose from the land it was created. It’s not quite the same as the versions we’re used to here in the USA, though it’s not like it’s completely unfamiliar, either. This beer is a less flash and more substance, and it’s just as tasty as the American craft brews.

I poured an 11.2oz bottle into a flared snifter. There was no freshness date and it cost $4.79 ($0.42 per ounce).

Appearance: Pale orange hue with an extremely cloudy body. Initially pours to a large, bright white layer of foam but it mostly dissipates and leaves little lacing. For what it’s worth, this is the foamiest gose I’ve ever seen.

Smell: A light citrusy scent of orange and coriander. The bacteria presence is noticeable and gives the nose a bit of a tangy quality – but in a good way, of course.

Taste: Most brews of the style I’ve had tend to come out swinging, but this one is cool, calm and collected. I get a lovely orange and coriander flavor right away, along with a bit of a wheaty sensation. There’s a mild salty sensation that lingers in the background. Once the swig hits the apex, it punches the tongue with a dry bitterness and a light sourness. On the aftertaste there is a lingering sensation of tartness and a bit of sour. I also notice a distinct lemon/lime flavor as well. The flavor fades rather quickly, but what’s there is quite enjoyable. I don’t think anyone would be put off by this palette.

Drinkability: The best way to drink Leipziger Gose is on a hot summer’s day (or night) so that it can deliver on its performance promise of being refreshing and quaffable. At only 4.6% ABV, this is definitely what I would consider a session beer for the warmer months…. That is, if it weren’t so expensive and rare. This brewery should sell this in 500ml cans – it would sell a lot of units very quickly.

Dirty copper color with a dense white cotton head. Lots of bubbles in the body. Aroma is all floral. Flavor is all lavender. This is like drinking liquid flower.

Sampled from a plain brown 33cl bottle - not the fancy bottle in the RB illustration. Pours a hazy golden colour with a plentiful white head. Lemony aroma. The taste is immensely refreshing and has lemon, salt and wheat in it. Slightly sour, but nothing too unpleasant, just a slight ’bite’. A very interesting style and a well-made beer.

200ml on tap at Nedre Foss Gård. Near clear yellow coloured body. Bubbly ring to the rim of the glass. Sell of wheat and citrus tartness. Taste of tart green apples, lemon, wheat and spices. Lingering dry and sour finish. Refreshing cleanser (Oslo 07.09.2015).

Very light and clear. Coriander on the nose. Tangy, bready, and refreshing, very fizzy. The first beer I’ve had like this. I like it, although I probably wouldn’t want more than one.

Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark golden color with a medium sized foamy white head that faded fairly quickly and left no lacing. The aroma was tart, citric and salty with a lemonade presence. The flavor was very tart, citric, salty, lemon zest and lemonade. Medium length finish. Medium body. Solid.

Bevuta al ma che siete venuti a fa? di Roma. E’ una birra che presenta un sapore acido e salato. Niente male, non facile a bersi se si prova una gose per la prima volta, ma degna di nota.

On tap @ Patricks. Unclear golden body with a moderate sized off-white head. Nice fruity aroma with citric, hint of lemon and coriander. Flavor is nice and refreshing citric fruit, mild acidic lemon, moderate coriander and some salt in the background. Medium to thin body and quite tart and refreshing aftertaste with acidic fruit and hint of salt. Nice, straight forward Gose.
