COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Doppel" means double and this beer is double in every way. Bayern Doppelbock became an instant legend when Bayern introduced it in Missoula in December of 1987. Unlike its top-fermenting counterparts, this hearty German dark lager does not have the rough bite of a porter or a stout. Bayern Doppelbock is dark, smooth and has plenty of hops (Saaz & Hallertauer Perle) and malt. It has a starting gravity of 18 degrees Plato. Bayern Doppelbock is available in bottles and on draft from November through February, just in time for the holidays and the coldest months. Please enjoy this festive beer in moderation and leave your car at home if you are planning to celebrate with Doppelbock. Draft Magazine rated Bayern Doppelbock 98 (out of 100): the highest rating for any beer in that category!

Very dark with ruby highlights. Almost no head. Rich quality chocolate malt aroma. Flavour does not measure up to the aroma. Sour bitterness up front. Chocolate covered cherries in the middle. Sourness in the finish. Maltiness does grow on you through the bottle.

Very dark brown. Rasiny, lightly toffeeish aroma. Fusel character...ack. Chewy, alcohol, fruity with lots of malt and nuts. Get rid of the higher alcohols and fruitiness and it still lacks the sort of bright, complex maltiness that a beer of this style should have.

Draught at Concordia, Portland. Clear dark ruby. Crystal malt aroma. Sweet with thick, yet hard mouthfeel. Papery and syrupy. I thought doppelbocks were supposed to display a rich malt character and soft mouthfeel, and here we’ve got a doppelbock with shitloads of hard, bleeding crystal malt. Give me a break!

Very dark red, sweet, rich taste. Sticky toffee with lingering after taste. GOOD.

This has some really sweet and rich dark fruits complemented nicely by dark chocolate. The nose does not really match the flavor, the nose is really tame compared to the flavor which I found to be quite complimentary on the palate.

Somewhat rich nose of dark smoky wood, perhaps some licorice as well and some dark fruits and nuts as well. Overall a bit of a mild smell, but still complex I would say. Creamy and smooth texture, while still robust and sweet on the tongue with a brown sugar and maple presence contrasted by a more smoky wood and meat flavor. Very sweet and full.

Pours a nice deep golden brown color. Aromas of rich dark malts, chocolate, fruit. Flavor is rich with a lot of flavors light chocolate, dark fruit, smoke, coffee.

This one poured with a small light brown head. It had little lacing, was clear and a ruby color. The aroma was light ot average with minimal hop, yeast, or alchohol. It had a light body. soft carbonation and mild malty flavor that was of short duration, moderatley sweet and a light yeasty after taste.

Bottle. Very deep brown color with ruby highlights when backlit, crystal clear. Moderate beige head forms and fades to a small layer over the beer. Good lacing. Aroma is doughy, slightly sweet and some dark fruit aromas also. Medium bodied, fairly clean tasting. Decent amounts of alcohol are detectable. Caramel seems to be predominant in flavor with a bigger than average hop bitterness. Somewhat earthy from hops? Fair to good dopplebock.

beerinmarch (2830) - Washington, USA - FEB 15, 2005
Out of the bottle this brew pours a dark mahogany with a tall light tan head. Fairly sweet malt aroma, mild roast, hint of chocolate and dark fruit. Taste starts sweet, not cloying, but smooth, with dark fruit throughout, and chocolate up front.
