COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Since we brew beer in the Bavarian tradition at Bayern (which means Bavaria in German) our list of beer styles would not be complete without our most recent addition: Face Plant Doppelweizen. This top-fermented, unfiltered Wheat Bock beer is the counterpart to Bayern’s famous Doppelbock Lager and is decoction-brewed, a technique used often in Bavaria but seldom in the US. The recipe uses five types of malt (Wheat, Pilsener, Carmel, Munich and Chocolate), and has an o.g. of > 17 % Plato, producing a stout 7.5 % Alc. by Vol. As with all Bayern wheat beers, Face Plant surprises with its complex flavor. German Hallertauer Perle hops give this hearty Bock beer a perfectly balanced sweetness. The formulation for this delicate beer came from the Brauerei zum Schiff in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria. Bayern Brewing’s proprietor, Jürgen Knöller, was one of the last of five brewers that brewed this special beer in 1979 before the brewery, which was founded in 1540, sadly closed its doors due to the owner’s passing. In fall of 2007, when it became apparent that the crisis of extremely high raw material prices would continue, the Bayern team decided to test the market with a brew that uses a very large amount of energy and raw materials while being the most difficult, labor-intensive, demanding beer that anyone could create. We told our distributors that we would do two brews at 1000 gallons each to see whether the market could handle the premium price that we had to charge due to these factors. Our "Super Brew" lasted only a couple of months and then completely sold out. So Bayern Brewing continues to brew Face Plant while its popularity continues to grow. Thus Doppelweizen has been revived here in Missoula, Montana, USA. We hope you will enjoy a piece of living beer history and a specialty beer that is truly rare, even in the Northwest’s highly diversified beer landscape.

Bottle. A: Deep mahogany color with a creme color head. Not much lacing. N: Cocoa, banana, toffee, toasted malt, cracker, big time clove and a touch of coriander, Dark fruit - particularly prune. Some cherry and mission fig. T: Very sweet, almost cloying, touch of bitterness. M: Huuuuge alcohol, light body, prickly carbonation. O: An interesting beer. A much more intense doppelbock, and yet, one that’s almost too extreme. Even Samichlaus doesn’t seem to have this much alcohol. Nice flavor, though.

Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a brownish color with a one finger head of a tan colored foam floating atop. The head has a moderate level of retention, slowly fading to leave a decent level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a caramel sweetness mixed with a decent showing of a wheaty and toasted malt smell. Along with these aromas comes some other lighter chocolate and toast smells adding a bit more roastiness to the aroma as a whole. Other darker fruit aromas of cherry and raisin are there as well adding a touch more sweetness to the smell. Taste – The taste begins with a sweet and malty flavor with the mix being of some toasted malt, a little bit of wheat, and a rather decent showing of caramel. Some other flavors of a dark fruit nature are there as well enhancing the other flavors nicely. The dark fruit start out almost entirely of a raisin taste, but as the taste moves on, it gains a bit of a cherry flavor as well. The wheat grows stronger and stronger as the taste advances with the increase in the fruit and a little bit of more roasted malt tastes coming to the tongue, one is left with a nice sweet and malty taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. For the darker and roasted flavors of the brew the feel is good and accentuates the flavors rather decently. Overall – This is a quite tasty doppelbock. Not super wheaty, but smooth, sweet, slightly fruity and rather easy drinking. And for the nice price, this is a good winter go to.

Dark yellow pour. Aroma of wood straw malt coffee. Tastes of coffee. Slightly short of sweet. Light carb thick yet refreshing. Well done doppel. Wheaty earthiness adds complexity.

Draught. Despite not being a fan of the style, I though this was passable for a beer (which is a huge style compliment). Poured a clear and very dark brown color with no head. Nose was sweet with caramel in there as well as some wheat. Taste was malty and a little toasty. Seemed more like a doppelbock to me.
