COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bayern Oktoberfest is the classic Bavarian Dark Märzen: not too sweet yet malty with a nice hop flavor. This beer is brewed with Pilsener, Munich and German Dunkel malt. The hops for this special brew come straight from the Hallertau region in northern Bavaria and the finishing hops are Saaz from the Czech Republic. Bayern’s fastest selling seasonal specialty beer, this beer is not just called Oktoberfest, it is Oktoberfest beer. It is brewed according to the standards of the Brewers’ Guild of Munich, which was established in 1815 when they brewed this beer for the first time to celebrate the royal wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Maria Theresia.

Picked up 12-oz bottle from Liquid Solutions. Pours a dark caramel cola brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that leaves behind a fine film and thin ring. Aroma of caramel malt, some light flowery hops, a touch of toffee and raisins. Taste is medium bodied, lightly carbonated with flavors of caramel malt and some dry roasted nuts and citrus. Finish is slightly dry with a good hop bite and a faint caramel malt aftertaste. One of the more dry Oktoberfest brew than the sweeter styles I’ve tried.

Pint on tap at the brewery pours a deep amber color with a small white head that leaves very little lacing behind. Aroma is mild with caramel and grass. Taste is a chocolate and caramel malty sweetness with some mild grassy hop bitterness. Medium bodied with light carbonation. A decent brew for the style but there are certainly better ones out there.

dark brown color. A touch sour. Ok, but not great, shows OK malt character, but very undistinguished.

Bottle... Poured deep ruby with a thin beige head. Aroma was robust with malted notes and rich figs and fruit. Really nice palate that has just the right amount of carbonation. I enjoyed the cocoa and buttery malt flavors while floral hops created a nice bittering balance. Finish was clean with a little brown sugar in the aftertaste.

Looks like a dunkel, tastes like a marzen. See through dark brown with initial foamy beige head. Sweet malt aroma with a hint of roast grains. More sweet malt taste, syrupy consistency, sweet finish. Lovely!

Bottle: Amber pour with a thin beige head. Not much to the aroma; a little sweet and malty. Florals show up a little bit in the taste, but caramel malt and an herbal note are the forefront. A little bready too. Overall refreshing and paried well with the general’s chicken.

13-Jan-08 (12-oz bottle, Best Before 01-Mar-08: Purchased 04-Dec-07 for $1.30 from liquidsolutions.biz) Wow, this stuff pouring into my pint glass is dark! This isn’t amber, but light brown mixed with ruddy brick. The half-inch tall head is tan in color and short-lived, fading to a wide ring within a few minutes. malty and lightly sweet-smelling when swirled, but a modest sourness comes out if the beer is undisturbed for several seconds. On the palate, the beer is very malty, more so than most examples of the style. It’s moderately sweet too, but certainly not sugary, though a light tartness emerges in the finish. It’s seems apparent that they simply used a LOT of malt to make this beer. Hops are mild, but on the perfumy and floral side, offering some balancing flavor and mild bitterness, but malt remains the focal point here. Medium in body and carbonation with a bit of acidity to break up the clinging maltiness. No lacing on the glass. Overall, it’s packed with flavor and has a very aggressive profile for an Oktoberfest, but the malty sweetness and floral hops make this less enjoyable than hoped.
