The term "pilsener" is widely used to describe a number of beers available on the market. According to German criteria for a true pilsener, however, the vast majority of them would be unrecognizable as such. By this definition, a pilsener is a lager beer with a light golden color (5-8 color units by European Brewersí Convention standards), a specific gravity in the 11.5-12.5% Plato range, and a hops content of at least 28 EBUs (European Bitter Units). Most so-called domestic "pilseners" fall far short in these categories; Bayern Pilsener easily meets all three (6 color units, 12% Plato, 34 EBUs). What does all this technical jargon mean? It means you have purchased one of the very few authenic pilseners brewed in America. Reward yourself by enjoying this beer the way it was meant to be served: pour your cold Bayern Pilsener, in two or three slow steps, into the center of your glass (a fluted or "tulip" glass works best). The thick creamy head (the German term for this is "crown") and you have just created the mark of a classic Bavarian pilsener. It is functional, too - the crown holds finely distributed natural carbonation inside the glass and acts as a shelter for this beerís distintive, hoppy flavor.

Draft at the brewery taproom; Poured in the traditional slow style (nice!), this has a classice German visual appeal -- golden grain, bubbly, with a nice bright poofy head. Sharp hoppy aroma. Silky smooth and sharply, almost puckeringly, bitter. Classic German pils, reminiscent of a good olí Bitburger stubie. (#2929, 5/19/2007)

I cannot believe this beer is not rated higher. Friend tells me the brewer uses all czech malt and hops and itís apparent in the beer. A clean, crisp taste with an ample amount of bitters. Finishes quick and clean. I have no real problems with this one. And for the price I prefer it to some European Pils.

Draft - I found this beer to be well done. Nice malty flavor, crisp finish. Perfectly hoppy. Excellent beer in the German style.

Very nice pils that just has a strong crisp and grassy finish that takes the edge off a hot day. Well built with a dry straw like maltiness, subtle, but enough to hold up to the nice finishing hops.

Very nice, crisp, full flavored, hoppy pilsener. Possibly the best American-made craft brewed pilsener Iíve had to-date. The hops really made this for me, which were very up-front and bitter, but with a clean finish that didnít overwhelm the palate. Maybe a little heavy for the style, but a very good beer nontheless.

Bottle. Hazy gold with thin white head. Really ugly for a pils. Nice hoppy aroma with malt backbone. Malty flavour with hoppy bite. Pleasing finish. This is a tasty ugly looking pilsener.

Draft at the Iron Horse in Missoula, MT. Clear light gold under a small white head. Nice Pils type aroma: grainy, biscuity, and floral. Body is medium, carbonation to match, and a clean, dry mouth feel. Well balanced between a thirst quenching, crisp bitterness and a light grainy sweetness. This was obviously fresh, and well crafted.

Bottle. Pours golden with medium white head. Big flowery, leafy hop aroma up front, but lots of subtle noble complexity, not overwhelming, with honey-like malt in the background. Palate is very nice, a little fuzzy carbonation, mouth pleasing resins. Flavor is very full of fresh barley graininess, ends on a lightly bitter herbal note. A very well done german-style pilsner.

Bottle poured a clear yellow with a small lasting white head. Aromas of straw, bread, spicy hops and light citrus. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of straw, bread, earthiness and spicy hops with a crisp dry finish.
