2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 jgb9348 (3490) - Arlington (Pentagon City), USA - DEC 24, 2010
Dark brown coloured body with a thin, fast-dying tan head like a soda. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, toffee and a touch of anise. Medium-bodied; Oily mouthfeel with a touch of roasted malt, earth, cardboard, light sugars and some lactic notes at first. Aftertaste shows some sweet stout flavours with some earth notes and some mild sweetness. Overall, a decent porter, but not showing too much character to swing one way or another. It’s not a bad beer, but not amazing. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Ricks Wine & Gourmet in Alexandria, Virginia on 19-December-2010, sampled in New Paltz, New York on 24-December-2010.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Thorpe429 (3823) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - APR 20, 2011
Pours a moderate brown color with a thin tan head and just a tiny touch of light lace before a thin collar forms and collects what is left of the head. The nose is some slight chocolate with a fairly-dominant smoke character. The flavor is mostly smoke with a bit of chocolate and roast there as well. Smokey feel and body is a bit light. Fairly quaffable for the style, though nothing too special. I would try this again, but wouldn’t seek it out.

2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 jcos (673) - Maryland, USA - APR 12, 2011
Bottle from Gilly’s, split with dbarnold. This is better than the two bottles of pale ale I bought, the second which I mostly poured out. Aroma is decent, taste is okay, but appearance is below average and toot hin for my tasting. I look forward to this brewery improving, but I have to rate what I tasted.

Bottle: Pours a barely transparent mahogany with a thin spotty-lacing beige head. Has a lightly sweet toasted dark caramel and roasted malty nose. Starts with a lightly sweet roasty malty body and a dry bittering hop balance before a roasted dark chocolate finish. Could use a touch more sweetness and body, but still fairly drinkable.

I bought this 22oz bottle at the brewery from Paul himself. It pours a very dark brown/black. The head dissipated quickly. The nose has chocolate and smoke notes. The taste is bitter with a smoky finish that lingers. The smoke is not overpowering and seems about right for my palate. This is decent and different enough porter to have on hand.

22oz bottle from Westover Market. Pours a watery, translucent, brownish black with zero head. Mild aroma, lightly malty, lightly smokey, lightly sweet. Flavor is artificial smoke, malt, brown sugar, coconut, malt extract, nail polish remover. Medium bodied, smokey finish. A little off. Doesn’t feel authentic.
