COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alt-style Schwarzbier
On our grandparents’ farm, our grandmother would brew a grègue of café noir every morning for our grandfather’s pre-dawn breakfast. At the end of each week, after the obligatory Sunday dinner, she would brew numerous pots of it. Each and every one of the adults would then sip demitasses of the strong black coffee, laughing loudly and speaking French even louder.

We wanted to create a beer that paid homage to what café noir meant to our French speaking ancestors. Café noir was more than a cup of coffee – its presence conveyed love and appreciation, and expressed a cheerful welcome.

We use specially roasted German malts and select American hops which provide our LA-31 Bière Noire a small bite of noble bitterness and a dry, French roasted coffee flavor. It goes great with grilled steaks, hamburgers, or sausage po-boys, any spicy blackened Cajun dish, or a dinner table surrounded by those you most cherish.

À votre santé.

[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a dark amber-brown with an average size semi-lasting frothy off-white head. Mild aroma of toasted malt, chocolate and a decent amount of hops. Flavour of toasted caramel malt, some chocolate, light leafy hops and grain. Light bitter finish. Average bodied. I thought it was pretty good.

Bottle from Guess Who? Bentonville. Deep brown with a massive tan head. The nose has a nutty dark roasted malt character. Some cocoa. Light coffee. Cocoa Puffs. Some cream. Flavor of lactose, cream. Milk chocolate. Milk stout-esque. Chocolate-covered raisin. Light, smooth body. Meh.

On tap in Brookhaven GA. Near black and opaque with s small head that soon reduces to a ring. 3.7. 3.5. 3.7. 3.7. 3.7 Very mild aroma. Fortunately. There is more flavor although it too is rather mild. Moderate malty with each hops to keep the bitter/sweet balance in check. O. Satisfying and recommended.

Bottle to hotel plastic cup - dark with a thin head. Had a pleasant malty mocha aroma and taste, some what of a slick mouthfeel. Seemed like a pretty good beer. Much like most beers, I bet this one is good fresh on tap at the brewery.

Simple schwarzbier, except made with black malt instead of a dehusked Carafa, so you get all the astringency of, say, a stout. Aroma of black malt, smooth flavor with a French Roast bite. Got this one at Beer Fest on Bourbon Street and walked down the street with it. Delicious. I now know what I’m going to do with that half pound of black malt I have in the basement. Thanks for the inspiration.

Bottle. Pours a hazy dark brown with a brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma a good amount of roasted malts with a bit of chocolate and dark grains backing. Flavor begins with smooth chocolate and has notes of growing roasted malts and dark grains.

Draft at Ole Saint, New Orleans. Deep garnet-brown body, medium dense creamy beige head. Light toasty, chocolaty nose. Toasty, nutty body with roast and chocolate notes. Also some cardboard. Basic and average.
