COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alt-style Schwarzbier
On our grandparents’ farm, our grandmother would brew a grègue of café noir every morning for our grandfather’s pre-dawn breakfast. At the end of each week, after the obligatory Sunday dinner, she would brew numerous pots of it. Each and every one of the adults would then sip demitasses of the strong black coffee, laughing loudly and speaking French even louder.

We wanted to create a beer that paid homage to what café noir meant to our French speaking ancestors. Café noir was more than a cup of coffee – its presence conveyed love and appreciation, and expressed a cheerful welcome.

We use specially roasted German malts and select American hops which provide our LA-31 Bière Noire a small bite of noble bitterness and a dry, French roasted coffee flavor. It goes great with grilled steaks, hamburgers, or sausage po-boys, any spicy blackened Cajun dish, or a dinner table surrounded by those you most cherish.

À votre santé.

Pours dark reddish-brown with a thin head and a mild coffee nose. Medium carbonation in the mouthfeel followed by a dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean finish.

Enjoyed at a @JaxBrewBitch bottle share at Brewer’s pizza in Jacksonville,FL... This one looked good, smelled good, good body, but just lacked in the flavor department to make it a really good beer. Almost...

Not bad, especially considering the brewery which I’ve never been all that impressed with. Pick this one up at AHA in New Orleans in 2013. Dark, with a medium body and sticky sweet. Seems like an overly sweet, chocolaty schwarzbier.

Bottle. Very dark brown, small to average and fully diminishing light brown head. Moderate, malty and sweetish aroma, some roasted malt with light chocolate. Body is medium, malty and lightly sweetish flavor, light roasted malt. Finish is short average, malty and lightly sweetish with some roasted malt and light chocolate, light metal and faint hoppyness. OK, bui bit one-dimensional schwarz.

Bottle. Deep dark mahogany with a ridiculously ginormous tan head. Earthy roasty malt aroma. Unpleasant petroleum-rubber-road-tar roasted malt flavor. Medium body, moderate carbonation. I’m not sure if we have a bottling issue here, or if I simply disliked the flavor.

355 ml bottle. Pours a dark orange-reddish brown with a short lasting beige head. Taste is vanilla, chocolate, cream, milk, coffee, touch of roast. Finish is coffee, light bitterness, roast. Touch of lingering vanilla, post-finish. Medium body. An alright dark beer, but a bit light to my liking.

I like the aroma. It’s very rich and roasty. A bit lighter mouthfeel than I expected. Roasted malt and coffee really shine through. Bitter chocolate comes through late. Dry, chalky finish. Tough to categorize this one. It’s not smooth enough to be a porter, and the flavors are wrong to be a stout. But it tastes good, and that’s what’s matters. À votre santé!
