Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
Very complex malt flavours form the basis of this multi-grained dark beer. Velvety smooth with a drying fruity hop finish.
Knoll’s Porter is based on Bridgewater Ales’ Delph Porter which won Stockport Beer of the Festival in 1999. Richard has recreated it with the kind permission of Ken Birch who devised the original recipe.
The small amount of smoked malt used in the recipe was provided by Dave Facer of Facer’s Brewery who took some malt to be smoked locally, near Wilmslow.

Cask at Merton Summer Beer and Cider Festival 16-07-09 Had this on the Thursday night. Pours almost black in colour with a beige head. There is a touch of smoke on the nose and also a dab of dark fruits. Taste is also a little smoky along with the dark fruits and bitter chocolate. I rather liked this and wish I could have had a bit more but there were so many others that were enticing me. A7 A3 F7 P4 Ov14 3.5

On gravity at the Royal Oak, Bath, winter festival 21/02/09. Massive charred malt aroma, with some dark fruit and bitter chocolate in the background. Flavour of ashes, smoked malts, prunes and burnt chocolate, with a decent bitter finish. Full of character in a way that I liked.

Cask in the Bon Accord. Alround rating: Grainy whisky, slight smokeyness, roasty, thin, quite smokey indeed. Not my style.

Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - Coventry BF. A black coloured beer with a sweet aroma with hints of honey and fruit. Some hops spotted also. The taste is smoky and fishy. There are definite smoked malt notes, and good hops. Pretty complex and tasty.

Cask (gravity) @ The National Winter Ales Festival 2008, Manchester, UK. Clear medium brown color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, brown sugar. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light bitter with a average to short duration. Body is medium, texture is oily - syrupy, carbonation is flat. Gravicask at The Bricklayers Arms Lancashire Fest, 15th Sept 2007. Dark brown with a small head. Deep, heady roasted malt, coffee and chocolate aroma leads into a smoky, complex flavour that demands you savour it. Just the right weight too. Sublime stuff.

Cask @ The Bricklayer’s Arms, Lancashire Beer Festival. Dark mahogany with a thin tan film. Sweet roasted malts, coffee, cocoa and subtle smoke with a nice prickly mouthfeel. I’m so used to these beers being flat that I was astounded this had bubbles in it. Easily my best of the fest, I had seconds..

Cask@Ealing BF. Nice little porter. Nice, soft dusty mouthfeel, with some nice roasted malt notes coming through. Finish is dry and not too heavy, earthy as well. Very nice.
