Our Hoptopus IPA is an 8-legged hophead’s dream. Its 8.8% ABV malt base balances with 8 separate additions of hops, 88 IBUs, and a foolishly generous dry-hop to make this denizen of the deep a lupulin delight.

Can pours a clear orange with some creamy, white head. Nose has a lot of orange peel and pine, some candy, some soap. Flavor is sweet, candy, honey, orange, pine, soap, a little herbal. Full bodied, bitter finish. Finishes a little tannic too.

[5654-20130816] Bottle. Fresh piney hops aroma. Clear, orange body with a medium-lasting foamy white head. Bitter resin hops flavour. Medium body is quite bitter. Tasty. (8/3/8/4/15) 3.8-

Reviewed from notes. Thank you, Haley for the can. This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a slightly hazy burnt orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute, light speckled lacing stuck around the glass nicely. The smell started off with a big blast of grapefruit, orange peel and pine that led to a somewhat resinous behavior to the aroma. The taste took the citrus flavors to town and amplified the pine a bit. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a slick resinous aftertaste that led to the same kind of finish. Overall, this was a very good offering that I wouldn’t mind having again.

A little muddled, especially the flavor, but fairly pleasant overall. Big n sticky, but nothing to really grab your attention besides some bitter geapefruit. OK.

From the can: 06/03/14 (so just under 3 months old?) I will also mention that the can states 108 IBU’s versus the 88 claimed on the page here. Appearance: Hazy medium shade of gold. Small but creamy white head that leaves some lacing on the glass. Aroma: Lots of citrus with specific notes of tangerine and orange. The aroma is fairly muted but it smells a lot like orange juice. I’ve had this beer before and while the aroma is not as pronounced as it was last time, it is markedly improved in the quality of the nose. Taste: It has a nice clean taste to it. There is a wash of bitter grapefruit up front followed by nothing but bitterness. I don’t pick up any malt or alcohol flavor. Just bitterness really. It’s pretty one-dimensional. Palate: The palate for this beer is just right. It is dry and bitter but not harsh or rough feeling. The bitterness cleans up the palate nicely. Overall: I think this is a beer that does bitterness very well, but greatly lacks in the strength of aroma and the hop flavor. It could be that the can is too old (3 months?). I probably wouldn’t buy it again unless I could try it on tap or a can within 30 days. Right now it just doesn’t offer as much as much as other double IPA’s.

A hoopy aroma of citrus, predominantly grapefruit. A good looking beer, caramel coloured, with a well laced white head that lasts for sometime. A strong taste of grapefruit and grapefruit rind. An oily finish with a lasting bitter palate.

From a tap into a snifter. Fruity aroma, very hoppy to the taste. Grapefruit, pretty predictable.

On tap as a flight at tapped in Virginia beach. Good beer overall. Pours a cooper orange color with very little head. Medium carbonation medium body. Definite floral and citrus on the palate. Finishes bitter as a DIPA should. Good example of the style. Seems a bit strong after some mellowed brews at yvbc but would stand up to spicy fare

12/14/2011. From bottle. Dark amber color with a white head. Caramel aromas with pine, citrus and floral notes. Alcohol is showing through and so are the hops. Very bitter finish
