3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the source. Pours with a clear amber hued body with a foamy off-white head. Aromas are of citrus, pine, lightly dank, herbal. Malt character seems a bit more complex than the description claims. Nutty, pale chocolate, medium caramel. Slight co-humulone roughness. Flavors are bitter, mildly grainy, grassy caramel and pine. Still a dry finish. Lively carbonation, nicely balanced bitterness and well hidden alcohol.

Nice red ale, with good malting. On tap at the brewery. Lacy on dark amber. Good mouthfeel for a DIPA.

Glass: 0.25L glass
From: Blind Lady Ale House in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2 (progressive kegs, $2 until 2 p.m., $3 until 3 p.m., $4 until 4 p.m.)
Purchased: Jan. 3, 2014
Consumed: Jan. 3, 2014
Misc.: BLAH called it a Red Imperial Ale, Beer Advocate called it an American / Amber Ale and Rate Beer called it an American Strong Ale
Poured a dark red mahogany color with 2-to-3 fingers of deep khaki tan head when I got it. Average amount of sporadic uneven lacing along the sides of the glass. Below average retention.
Smelled citrus hops, floral hops, earthy malts, caramel, toffee and faint rye hops.
Taste was pretty bitter with what I’m sure is a lot of IBU’s. Hoppy - resin, floral, citrus and grapefruit. Still kind of earthy, but not as noticeable as the smell.
Medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Average carbonation. Bitter finish.
A pretty good beer overall, although I got three different descriptions (see Misc.). I think it was closest to the Red Imperial Ale, which was what I assumed and rated on anyway. Either way I’d have it again for sure.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap at Beachwood long beach. Clear red amber with great webby lacing. Nose is malty, bready. Taste is fairly juicy, big red grapefruit, clean bitter palate. Fairly juicy mouthfeel. Actually quite nice passing for red ipa. Actually very drinkable and quite nice. Quite fresh and citrus grapefruit centric. Not boozy or astringent.

Clear dark amber color with ivory foam. Big spicy, dank hop aromas with tea leaf, spicy caramel. Medium body with average co2. Spicy earthy hop flavors with tea leaf on a caramel fruity base brew. Nice alcohol twang to finish--good n boozy

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Amber colored pour with an off-white head. Really nice, bright hop aroma. Lots of citrus such as grapefruit and tangerine. Some hints of pineapple, a bit of herbs, and some pine. Sweet caramel and toasted nuts, too. Tastes mildly sweet and has a nice malt character. Fruity hop characteristics enhance the sweetness. A moderate bitterness of pine and woody herbs.

I had this on tap at Beachwood in Long Beach. This is a nicely balanced, complex brew with good hop and malt flavors.

Another winner from Julian. For an imperial it is still really balanced. There is a boat load of hops in here but the malts are playing right along with them. Does not show the alcohol at all.
