Draft. Black beer with a brown head. Chocolate and light nutty aroma. Chocolate and toffee flavor with malt. Medium-plus bodied. Chooclate and toffee lingers with malt and light butterscotch. Light roastiness creeps in.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 jonno (1454) - JAPAN - FEB 26, 2012
Roast and rasin on the nose. Very roasty. Like Old Rasputin. Rich. Chocolate and lots of espresso on the finish. Well made if every so slightly lacking. My Impy preference is usually sweeter, but this was nice.

Pours black with a finger of khaki colored head. Heavy on the roasted malts with a strong coffee and licorice note. There is a touch of burnt sugar aroma to it as well. Definitely a bit of molasses and dark chocolate, too. The flavor is similar. Somewhat bitter with all of the roast, molasses, and coffee flavors. A touch of sweetness of licorice and toffee. Some burnt sugar and a little bit of cocoa and dark chocolate. Medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Enjoyed on tap as part of the Beachwood sampler at Bruery Provisions in Orange, CA. Appearance is pitch black, oil like consistency, thin dark tan head that rims around the glass. Aroma is slightly faint with lactose and chocolate. Taste is really nice and smooth, Oates, like an imperial oatmeal stout. I’m getting chocolate, lactose, and a hint of molasses. It’s pretty good, slightly burning sensation.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Sammy (6113) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 20, 2012
Enjoyed on tap as part of the Darkside flight at Bruery Provisions. A little sour, a sipper, but good tasting. Big roast aroma. Average mouthfeel, which is below par for a RIS. Somewhat too roasty to be very drinkable.
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BMan1113VR (6444) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JAN 19, 2012
On tap at the source. Pours with a completely opaque black body with a frothy tan head that lasts to a ring. Good lace that gets batted down by some alcohol legs. Glass coating. Aromas are huge on chocolate, specifically dark chocolate, fudge, almonds, dark fruits, mild coffee, vanilla and light esters. Flavors are quite bitter, dark fruits, bitter chocolate, some floral notes from hops. Raisins, rich yet dry. Lingering molasses in the finish. You can feel the alcohol, but not much in the way of fusel or higher alcohols in the flavor. Creamy, bitter and dry in the finish. Warming. Good stuff. Tovarish is more interesting, but this is a very solid, and bitter American take on an imperial stout.
