Sample at GABF 10/11/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. The beer pours black with a medium beige head and patches of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Full-bodied with flavors of black coffee, licorice and sweet malt. The finish is roasty with a lingering mocha aftertaste. Very good stout, and my favorite beer of the day.

Tap at Beachwood Long Beach. Opaque, inky pour. Medium mocha foam. Webby, thicker lacing. Nose is all coffee- acidic lemon, caramel, roast. Taste is more coffee with salted caramel, bitter chocolate. Still a bit green feeling, but the coffee character is very intense. Palate is silky, rich, salty, buoyant. Very nice.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black in color with a great tan head. Wonderful retention and lacing. Enormous, almost overwhelming coffee aroma. There’s a very nice vanilla note to it, a touch of oak, and tons of cocoa and dark chocolate. Of course, some roast, but great sweetness. The coffee steals the show on the palate, as well. Mild wood and brandy notes, a touch of vanilla and roast, and quite a bit of chocolate, toffee, and molasses. Just wonderful stuff.
