Tovarish is a bold Russian imperial stout brewed with a base of British Maris Otter barley and heaping amounts of roasted barley and specialty malts. It’s finished with a touch of blackstrap molasses along with espresso brewed with the finest Arabian Mocha-Java coffee from our friends at Peet’s. Tovarish is remarkably rich and complex. Savor the layers of roast and dark fruits with every sip.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2015 20 oz bottle poured into tulip for #bottlecherwednesday at Beachwood in Seal Beach. Black opaque body with a light brown head that settles to a thin layer. Occasional lacing. Aroma is espresso, roasted malts, bakers chocolate, and dark fruits. Taste starts with moderately bitter coffee and nutty flavors then shows a light malty, chocolate sweetness. Medium-plus body, thick and creamy texture, moderate to soft carbonation, slightly bitter coffee ground finish.

22 ounce bottle. Thanks Mike! Pours black with a smallish tan head. Aroma of coffee, malt, and chocolate. Taste is strong coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, and dark fruit. Excellent.

Keg at Toronado, SF, 02/02/16. Black topped with a decent tan swirl. Nose is rich espresso, coffee cake, roasted tones, chocolate, dark malt. Taste comprises coffee grinds, coffee cake icing, toasted brown sugar, toffee fudge, light cocoa nibs, roast malt. Medium + bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a well restrained alcoholic intermission. Mighty fine coffee drool.

Draft at Toronado SF. Pours deep brown-black with a creamy tan head. Massive espresso aroma, with secondary notes of roasted malts and cocoa. Big sweet flavor, offset nicely by the bittersweet espresso and baking cocoa, some earth, ash. Full bodied, chewy, with fine to average carbonation. Warming and ashy on the finish, with more bittersweet baking cocoa and lingering espresso. Solid.

Draught at Toronado SF. Opaque black liquid with medium tan head. Aroma of coffee, espresso, licorice, light ash and toast. Taste is light sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of coffee, espresso, licorice and grain. Full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Nice. Lots of coffee.

On tap at Toronado. Black pour with thin white head. Aroma is really rich and roasty, tons of coffee, so much coffee, caramel, caramel latte. Taste is med sweet, very roasty, tons and tons of coffee. Palate is full bodied, med sweet, tons of carbonation. Good stuff.

2015 bottle with a red wax top. The coffee in this beer is the prominent taste you get first. Portola Coffee Lab coffee is amazing. There’s a reason it’s being used in Mocha wednesday. One of the best coffee stouts I’ve ever had.

Bottle, 2014 with thanks to GT2! Pours opaque black, small brown head, creamy and slow to dissipate, nice lacing. Aroma is coffee, roasty espresso, cocoa. Flavor is light sweet, medium bitter, espresso forward. A bit of ashtray. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel.
