Sampled @ RBBSG III. Clear orange golden color, medium sized white head. Aroma is malts, hops, lightly resin, quite fruity. Tastes the same and I love it: malts, lots of hops, lightly resin, fruity, bitter. Medium body and carbonation.

On draught at Mellow Mushroom in Dublin. The beer is a mostly clear tangerine color with a medium thick white head that recedes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, citrus and malt. Medium body with flavors of citrus hops, bready malt and caramel. The finish is hoppy with a zesty citrus aftertaste. Above average IPA overall.

Tart musty fruits such as pineapple, mandarin oranges and lemons are present in the nose. Nicely balanced sweet citrus flavors with a mild tartness. Some green apple notes and a light unpleasent tinny character. Overall very tasty.

Growler from Craft Ale, and a pint at Capone’s, my two current favorite beer hangouts. The pour is dark straw, more toward gold than brown, with 1-finger of well retained off-white head. The nose is heavy piney hops, caramel malt, some fruit, peppery spice, tangerine. Tastes assertively hoppy with a good malt balance, and some finishing fruit. Well incorporated alcohol makes this one very easy to drink, and a damned fine IIPA. Give me another growler of this one any day of the week, and twice when my wife isn’t around.

On tap. Pours with a large foamy head and a slightly hazed orange body. Citrus, caramel, orange, alcohol. Taste is tea, caramel, light hops. Creamy bubbles. A bit faded.

My Bottom Line:
Starkly floral, this quality West Coast Double IPA also shares lean honeyed cereals before making room for a grassy and citrusy hop finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the misty honey blond.
-The resinous hop bitterness is relatively soft (softer than the usual Double IPA’s anyway).
-Malts develop biscuity angles in the second half.
-Alcohol is deceptively well hidden. This drinks like a 7% IPA (why is it so strong (9%) then?)
-Citrusy fruitiness recalls passionfruit and candied ginger at times.

Bottle.

On tap at the Dirty Truth, Northampton MA, on 19 April 2010. Darkish amber colour. Pine, with some floral notes on the nose. Big strong orangey hops with strong marmalade character. Late bitterness, lingering into the aftertaste. A little residual sweetness. Very enjoyable and surprisingly drinkable. Overall score-wise, not a lot to choose between this and the Port Brewing Mongo tasted immediately before.

Pours a transparent deep bronze with a wispy lacing white head. Has a fairly fresh citrusy grapefruit hoppy nose with sweet underlying light caramel notes. Starts with good fullness and a sweet toasty light caramel and pale maltiness well balanced with an assertive resiny hop flavor before a drier crisp bittersweet finish. A nice iipa.

On tap at Cato’s in Oakland, CA. It pours a clear copper with thin white head. The aroma starts out like candied orange wedges. Upon further study grapefruit hops and caramelized malts seem to mix together to create a sweet orange candy aroma. The taste is thick and chewy grapefruit, pineapple and pine hop bitterness. There are brief moments where sweeter grapefruit hop flavor murmurs to the surface. Midway a roasty semi sweet maltiness struggles in vein to be heard over the onslaught of hops. A delicious malty – hoppy IIPA.

Cask. Rich amber beer with a cream colored head. Big grapefruit aroma. Grapefruit and pine flavor with light summer fruits. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Grapefruit and pine lingers with light caramel.
