On tap at the Portland Holiday Ale Festival. Colour... solid black with no head. Nose... sweet and slightly sour, a bit of Bourbon and somewhat phenolic. Palate... sweet, sort of tart, chocolate, roasty, tangy, dark brown sugar, 11.5%? Really?? Ah! There it is!! WOW (Chris Walken’s voice)!!! Got the 11.5 on the finish.

At 2012 Avery Strong Ale Fest. Black with a thin light khaki head. Interesting aroma of light chocolate malts, and cinnamon French toast, with a touch of molasses. Taste is dark and chewy sweet, and a little warm. Dark chocolate, brown sugar, anise, light cinnamon, and a dark fruity essence that isn’t really pronounced, but it’s quietly there.

Tap @ Avery, doing the 10th Annual Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours dark brown with a offwhite head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, little dark fruit. Taste is malts, coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, strong boozy. Full body, soft carbonation, alcoholic finish. 090312

On tap at Avery Strong Ale Fest poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of nail polish remover, bitter chocolate and roastiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of nail polish remover, bitter chocolate and light roastiness with a smooth lingering chocolate finish.

Boulder Strong Ale Fest. Dark brown appearance with a small light brown head. Rich licorice, dark chocolate, boozy, woody aroma. Rich, big sugary, black licorice, chocolate, somewhat boozy flavor. A bit thin and a little too boozy for me.

sample at GABF on 10/1/11. black pour with sm tan head. roast nose with oak, coffee and chocolate. medium body with more coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, and oak. sweet finish with oak notes and light vanilla.

Served at the Stone 15th Anniversary Celebration. The appearance is a brown black hue. The nose is a bit weak. Mild roasted aromas come through. The flavors have a more to offer with a malty grain mix, oatmeal, mild roast coffee, some bourbon. The mouth is a little thin. A tasty beer but need some work.

This beer was one of my favorites from the Holiday ale festival. The darkness of the body, the caramel color of the head, and the wonderful coffee aroma let you know that you are in for quite the treat. The taste is everything you would expect from the look and smell, and the high alcohol content is smoothed out nicely by the french oak. Bear Republic’s best work by far

Holiday Ale Fest... Poured dark brown, almost black, with a light brown head. Aroma of wine-like and whiskey alcohol. Sweet, cherry-like fruits with lots of booze, oak, and vanilla. Borderline cloying, but just not enough to be fully enjoyable. Yeast was nice and well balance and overall a sweet beer. Burning, alcohol heat in the finish.
