A barrel aged version of our American-Belgo-style Double IPA brewed with 30% rye, American 2 row malt, Pilsner malt, American hops, and fermented with a Belgian Abbey ale yeast. With significant quantities of Chinook and Amarillo in the kettle and Amarillo dry hops, this bitter, hoppy and spicy ale is sure to delight.

On tap at the Triple Rock Sour Beerfest. Pours cloudy golden with a massive off-white head and a light bready aroma. There is a mellow light malt flavor that starts sweet with a dry slightly bitter finish. Very tasty.

Sampled at FOBAB, 2011. This was hoppy barrel aged done extremely well. Hazy citrus, lemon and tropical hop, yeasty rye toast, crisp, spicy white wine, and woody, herbal grass in nose. Aroma really got me excited. The pour featured a nice layer of clumpy white head, and straw yellow body. The taste starts off tart and sour with a good mixed display of fruit, though citrus and tropical fruits are most prominent. Sparkling wine comes into play as well, along with woody funk, and more funky rye toast, and herb. There’s really a lot going on here, but everything really does work together. Finishes with funk, light spice, citrus, and a hint of wine and oak. Overall, I’m super impressed. This was great.

FOBAB 2011. Pours a lightly clouded, bright golden yellow colored body with a finger-width, dense and frothy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma has lots of citrusy florals with a few resiny pines in there too. Belgian yeast esters with a really nice woody oak, funk, and light rye spice. The hops still dominate but the rye, barrel, and funk add a nice complexity. Flavor is similar. Lots of citrus florals and some pine resins up front with a good amount of Belgian yeast esters. Really nice vinous flavor as well. Solid rye and oak as well as a touch of funk again. Finishes dry and moderately bitter with lots of citrus hops and dry oak. Some funk and wine with Belgian yeast and a few esters as well as a nice spice in a lengthy aftertaste. Medium body with a moderate carbonation. Overall, a really solid beer. Lots going on with the hops, yeast, oak, funk, rye, and wine. This really did it for me. Very nice!

bear republic ryevalry consumed at FOBAB 2011... Pours a hazy Berliner like wheatlike pour with a huge overwhelming fluffy white head... Aroma of big Brett and grassiness. Grapefruit and citrus. Herbal delight with the brett... Flavor of herbalness, grass, a touch too sweet but finishes off semi- dry. Big bretted beer with a soft body and livilier carbonation. 8/4/7/3/13

FOBAB 2011. Very bitter. Light mouthfeel and bright flavor. Lots of esthers, which I found unappealing. Decent, but wouldn’t get again.

A: The pour is a rather pale golden color with a white head on top. S: Still surprisingly hoppy, though nowhere near as good as the regular. Nice floral hop aromas with some citrus and citrus peel. The oak is there, but not overbearing. Some mildly sweet bread and malt notes. T: The bread and malt flavors are fairly pronounced here. The oak and barrel contributions are somewhat minimal. Floral hops with nice orange and lemon zest flavors. Perhaps a touch of grass and spice. M: Medium in body with a moderate to high level of carbonation. O: I’m not usually one for Barrel Aged IPAs, and especially not a Barrel Aged Belgian IPA, but this was pretty enjoyable.

Great rye flavor while still maintaining that signature Bear Republic hop bite. IMO could have been a little more aromatic.
