4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
My snifter is as happy as it has been in a while. Pours with a huge light brown head. The body is almost perfectly black with hints of ruby when held up to the light. Nice sweet and fruity aroma with sour apples, prunes, anise and some deep, earthy malt. The taste is rich with dark chocolate, coffee and maybe some dirt. This has a fairly thin mouthfeel, but it doesn’t bother me as it is full in the flavor department. The finish is light with some fresh mushrooms. I really like this one. Easily the best Bear Republic I have had.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Near black color with medium tan head. Aroma of berries (particularly raspberry), cascade hops, deep malts, roasted. Coffee flavor, medium body, not overly complex for the style, and didn’t change all that much as it warmed. This is a solid beer overall, no flaws, but there are more complex versions of the style.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
The color is a deep dark brown. Loads of sediment. The head is light in color (for the style) and leaves a nice lace.
Rich aroma. Dark bitter chocolate, molasses, brown sugar and coffee. This smells like any ol’ imperial but with something hidden underneath: fingernail polish. Quite odd. Nothing special in the aroma here.
Some interesting flavors come about in this beer. Loads of sweet molasses start everything off, followed by a velvety smooth chocolate soak. Coffee flavors are apparent but stagnent in this imperial. It finishes with roasted cocoa, burnt grapes and an unmistakabe cascade hop finish. The hops are in the backround throughout. I don’t like cascade hops with Imperial Stouts.
Very drinkable as the 8.1% alcohol hides itself well. Nice mouthfeel as well.
This beer is very good when compared to every beer but compared to Imperial Stouts, especially California Imperials, it is mediocre.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Its really brown i guess but gives off a oil black apperance with rapid diminishing tan head. Precious aroma of smoked malts. Flavour is sweetend with the right amount of sugars and dark chocolates. Smooth creaminess making this one of the best stouts ive had so far.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A very nice pour. Aroma is strong chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, espresso, cream, and vanilla. Very nice mouthfeel, very smooth. Very chewy. Alcohol isn’t too high in content, but is masked well. A good imperial stout, but I expecte it to be more complex.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: NOV 16, 2004 2003 bottle. Pours a deep brown with a touch of auburn around the sides. Big creamy beige head. Aroma is fairly simple. NW hops, lots of chocolate, roast and alcohol. Flavor seems a bit off. Lots of roast, but it’s very dry and the alcohol kinda sneaks in. All the while the body seems a bit lacking. The carbonation, furthermore, was very undesirable, creating a bubbly sort of broken up mouthfeel. Hops on the finish, chocolate throughout, some sweetness at the end.
