Big Bear is a big, black, stout you can really sink your teeth into. The bold, roasty, caramel malt flavor is balanced by Centennial and Cascade hops.

(355ml bottle shared @ VilleValla Pub, Linköping, Feb 16 2016) Pours black with a loose whitish head and lace. Aroma of very sweet caramel and butterscotch, dates, lots of vanilla fudge, light coffee, dusty roast. Flavour is less fruity, caramel and light molasses, a bit of coffee, toasted grains, maybe a touch of dark dried fruit. Finish is bitter with lingering caramel giving quite some sweetness, roast malt, a bit of dark fruit, touches of spent grain. Medium bodied with average carb. Definitely more US-style foreign stout but without the outright hop bite hoped for. Pretty good, not great.

This one is definitely over rated. Period. Pours up black, with a light brown head. Aroma is licorice, roasted malt, and some weird phenol. This thing is heavy. The first taste is some what mellow with a hefty malt, then it kicks into high gear with a hot alcohol burn followed by a hop bite. The taste is a mess. Finishes quickly with the same weird phenol after taste. Overall...not good. I’m being very generous giving it a 2.7.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Prune, raisin and caramel on the nose with dark chocolate and some coffee notes as it warms. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Well-balanced with lots of roasted notes, but also good fruit and chocolate as well. So smooth and abv is magnificently hidden. Balanced finish with good roasted malt and toasted caramel.

Refrigerated brown bomber poured into a snifter. Black with medium light brown head. Aroma is rich chocolate malt, medium/thick body, lower carbonation, silky texture, and little lacing. Taste is chocolate malt, roast, some ash, some anise, and balancing herbal hops

Bottle from World Beer Market (Sake no Taniguchi). Big dark roast nose, medium dark chocolate, licorice, and some light smoke notes. Thick black color, with a dark tan head. Dark roast, berries, big chocolate, some coffee. maybe lactose, and a deep bitter finish. Heavy body, very creamy. Rich and full-flavored stout, just on the edge of imperial style.

Poor is jet black with a thick smoke ahead. Aroma of bitter hops, roast and Baker’s chocolate. Taste follows, hops up front, roast, molasses and dark chocolate. Really nice, solid stout.
