Big Bear is a big, black, stout you can really sink your teeth into. The bold, roasty, caramel malt flavor is balanced by Centennial and Cascade hops. 2009 California State Fair – 2nd GOLD 2009 LA International Beer Competition – GOLD 2007 Great American Beer Festival® American-Style Stout – SILVER 2002 World Beer Cup - GOLD

22 oz bomber poured into my SN snifter. Dark deep jet black with small foam tan head. Head has fair retention, very light lacing on the side of my glass. Nose is mostly caramel and light roast. Slight hints of citrus. Taste has slight roast, moderate burnt sugar and brown sugar sweetness. Faint citrus on the finish. Alcohol also shows up on finish. Body is a tad thin for my liking. No real changes as it warms. Oh we’ll, what a steal at $4.99 a bomber at Premier.

Tap. Dark pour with a big mocha head. Coffee, mocha, cream, bitter dark chocolate. Smoother and silkier than expected. Medium easy to drink vody with a long finish. Nice!

Bottle from Latitude, Leeds. Apparently this was one of a last batch brewed before a ban on the commercial use of water in the brewery’s area at the time. It was the last one in the shop I bought it from where I got this back story. A fairly crisp stout, and retains plenty of roasted malt aroma and taste with a small soapy character to it. Black, no head.

Pours an opaque black with a nice 1 finger khaki colored head and good lacing. Aroma of dark roasted malt, coffee beans and herbal hops. Taste has nice dark chocolate and espresso with a bit of herbal hops on the finish. Mild bitterness on the palate after each sip. Good carbonation with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle at Hop Haven. Smoky, roasty, bit of spice. Taste is great, spiky, but with vanilla, creme brûlée.

Black with a mocha head. Aroma roast and sweet, dark fruit, sweet caramel, chocolate. Taste big and sweet, roasty, lots of chocolate, lots of coffee coming through later in palate and more chocolate (and some chalk) in finish. Very sweet. Good desert sipper, just sore of being cloying, but I probably wouldn’t drink more than one.

Shame I had a bit of a stuffy nose tonight. This one was nice and hoppy, which was a surprise. The cascade hops are probably to blame. Really sweet also though. Gonna keep this one short. I liked it

Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell during the Peter’s leaving do. Picked up somewhere about five years ago. Pours deep black with a large, frothy khaki head. The nose holds a bit of milk chocolate, burnt toffee, soft roast. Medium sweet flavor with lots of dry chocolate, toasted caramel, some tobacco, scorched earth, coffee beans. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Finishes with ample ashy roast, mild notes of oxidation, bittersweet cocoa, raisins. Drinking pretty well for the age but you can certainly detect the age.
