Big Bear is a big, black, stout you can really sink your teeth into. The bold, roasty, caramel malt flavor is balanced by Centennial and Cascade hops.

22 oz bottle into a tulip. From notes. A: Pours a dark ruby color that actually reveals some suspended sediment when held up to the light. Otherwise, it’s nicely opaque. The head is a two finger khaki shade. It fades slowly but surely, however it leaves little lacing on the glass. S: I note some licorice, dark fruits, touches of both smoke and citrusy hops, along with a hint of roast. A rather nondescript aroma for an imperial stout; it’s more befitting of a good single stout. T: This one seems to be dark fruit and licorice forward. I notice some caramel in the midtaste, and pleasantly balanced citrusy hops on the back end. The hops also provide some herbal and peach qualities. It seems to be mellow and balanced to a fault - however, this would make a great everyday stout due to its easygoing nature. M: It’s light, clean, and dry. If the bottle didn’t say 8.1%, I’d wonder if it was really 5% or so; the alcohol is concealed superbly given its lightness. It doesn’t offer much in the way of richness, however. O: I was unsure how to grade this one. As an imperial stout, it’s rather meh - but as a regular stout, it’s damn good. For better or for worse, this drinks like a 5% single stout...except that it’s really 8.1%. Since Bear Republic doesn’t call it an imperial stout, I’m grading it as a single. Ergo, I’m willing to overlook some of its flaws and appreciate it as a decently priced (for a bomber) everyday drinker.

Pours opaque black into the glass with a large choco-tan head that retains well, leaving chunky soap lacing. The nose is of chocolate and toffee with lightly roasted grains. All flavors follow suit, focusing on roasted grains, semi-sweet chocolates and lightly burnt toffee, all finishing with a toasted grain that lingers appropriately. The palate is creamy and has a smooth mouthfeel with a medium-full body, providing a satiating and complex quaff. A truly gorgeous sweet Impy stout, full of character, texture for days and makes for a wonderful aperitif or nightcap. Just gorgeous.

Purchased at Siciliano's in Grand Rapids, MI, enjoyed at home after a long run. Very very good stout. Appearance is pitch black, moderate consistency, light tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, light lactose, smells more dry than rich. Taste is awesome, not very sweet, large chocolate and light hazelnut notes, decadent without being rich. Very very good.

Smooth, lighter Stout. I drank it out of the bottle though... I am told thats the wrong way to do it.

@ Taproom, Malmö 16-8-13: Lakritsdoft och med en liten beska samt toner av choklad och kaffe. Ok, men kanske lite tråkig.

Bottle 355ml, a dark beer with low copper brown head. Nose is on dark chocolate, peppery hops touch. Aroma is on dark coffee, intense licorice wood notes, dark chocolate, light peated touch, some chili / vegetable hints, mocha, very sweet, medium creamy body. Long roasted aftertaste duration with dry peppery biterness, good.

On tap at Taproom Malmö. Black with a tan head. Aroma and taste of dark malt, licorice, chocolate and some coffee. The finish was quite dry and bitter.
