Big Bear is a big, black, stout you can really sink your teeth into. The bold, roasty, caramel malt flavor is balanced by Centennial and Cascade hops.

22 oz bottle into a tulip. From notes. A: Pours a dark ruby color that actually reveals some suspended sediment when held up to the light. Otherwise, itís nicely opaque. The head is a two finger khaki shade. It fades slowly but surely, however it leaves little lacing on the glass. S: I note some licorice, dark fruits, touches of both smoke and citrusy hops, along with a hint of roast. A rather nondescript aroma for an imperial stout; itís more befitting of a good single stout. T: This one seems to be dark fruit and licorice forward. I notice some caramel in the midtaste, and pleasantly balanced citrusy hops on the back end. The hops also provide some herbal and peach qualities. It seems to be mellow and balanced to a fault - however, this would make a great everyday stout due to its easygoing nature. M: Itís light, clean, and dry. If the bottle didnít say 8.1%, Iíd wonder if it was really 5% or so; the alcohol is concealed superbly given its lightness. It doesnít offer much in the way of richness, however. O: I was unsure how to grade this one. As an imperial stout, itís rather meh - but as a regular stout, itís damn good. For better or for worse, this drinks like a 5% single stout...except that itís really 8.1%. Since Bear Republic doesnít call it an imperial stout, Iím grading it as a single. Ergo, Iím willing to overlook some of its flaws and appreciate it as a decently priced (for a bomber) everyday drinker.

Originally rated on 9/18/08. Big Bears best attribute was its aroma along with the normal stout aromas of roasted malts, and nuts there was also floral notes present. It was a pitch black body with a small head. Mouthfeel was good a little on the thin side but o.k. Flavor was a smooth mixture of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and alcohol. Overall a pretty good stout thats worth a try

Thick malty aroma, pours a thick dark brown with a thin foam head. Nice velvety feel on the tongue and a good initial imperial taste. Sweet up front with sugars. However, a way too bitter aftertaste. It really detracts from the beer. Tap.

Very rubbery aroma, black grommits. Dark, brief head. Very nice savoury soy taste. Medium palate, carbonation a bit low. Finish roasty, and very soyey and savoury. Odd one, not bad, but not good either.
