This one is definitely over rated. Period. Pours up black, with a light brown head. Aroma is licorice, roasted malt, and some weird phenol. This thing is heavy. The first taste is some what mellow with a hefty malt, then it kicks into high gear with a hot alcohol burn followed by a hop bite. The taste is a mess. Finishes quickly with the same weird phenol after taste. Overall...not good. I’m being very generous giving it a 2.7.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Prune, raisin and caramel on the nose with dark chocolate and some coffee notes as it warms. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Well-balanced with lots of roasted notes, but also good fruit and chocolate as well. So smooth and abv is magnificently hidden. Balanced finish with good roasted malt and toasted caramel.

Dark roast, berries, big chocolate, some coffee. maybe lactose, and a deep bitter finish. Heavy body, very creamy. Rich and full-flavored stout, just on the edge of imperial style.

Poor is jet black with a thick smoke ahead. Aroma of bitter hops, roast and Baker’s chocolate. Taste follows, hops up front, roast, molasses and dark chocolate. Really nice, solid stout.

undated 22 oz. bottle served in pint glass (from May 2011 notes). A - Black with reddish brown edges. Frothy, mixed-density tan head with very good retention and exceptional lacing. S - Dark roasted malts dominate, as they should, but there’s also a spicy hop note and hints of coffee and caramel. Slight evidence of higher ABV. T - A model stout, with all the elements that should be found present in excellent proportion. Rich dark malts without undue smokiness or burnt qualities accompanied by a near perfect hop flavor and bitterness. Higher ABV is almost completely hidden. Excellent finish and aftertaste! M - Superb full body with above average carbonation for style that seems perfect. O - I believe this is the best ’normal’ stout I’ve ever had (i.e., excluding exotics like Founders CBS). Rather hoppy for style, but not radically so, and with great effect.
