3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep black-brown pour with a small, loose, tan head. The aroma is earthy and chocolaty, with a good dose of spicy hops, espresso, and a hint of rolled oats. The flavor is heavy roast, lots of alcohol, with dry dark chocolate in the middle, strong dark coffee at the end and plenty of piny hops. The body is dry, medium mouthfeel, with light carbonation.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
undated 22 oz. bottle served in pint glass (from May 2011 notes).
A - Black with reddish brown edges. Frothy, mixed-density tan head with very good retention and exceptional lacing.
S - Dark roasted malts dominate, as they should, but there’s also a spicy hop note and hints of coffee and caramel. Slight evidence of higher ABV.
T - A model stout, with all the elements that should be found present in excellent proportion. Rich dark malts without undue smokiness or burnt qualities accompanied by a near perfect hop flavor and bitterness. Higher ABV is almost completely hidden. Excellent finish and aftertaste!
M - Superb full body with above average carbonation for style that seems perfect.
O - I believe this is the best ’normal’ stout I’ve ever had (i.e., excluding exotics like Founders CBS). Rather hoppy for style, but not radically so, and with great effect.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Latitude, Leeds. Apparently this was one of a last batch brewed before a ban on the commercial use of water in the brewery’s area at the time. It was the last one in the shop I bought it from where I got this back story. A fairly crisp stout, and retains plenty of roasted malt aroma and taste with a small soapy character to it. Black, no head.
