Big Bear is a big, black, stout you can really sink your teeth into. The bold, roasty, caramel malt flavor is balanced by Centennial and Cascade hops. 2009 California State Fair – 2nd GOLD 2009 LA International Beer Competition – GOLD 2007 Great American Beer Festival® American-Style Stout – SILVER 2002 World Beer Cup - GOLD

Another rare perfect beer. I cannot come up with any way this beer could be made better. I have had better beers, but for the style, it is perfect. Hoppy nose. Milk chocolate. Fully opaque, black. Tan head. Mostly diminishing. Fine head and lace. Clean, crisp appearance. Nice hoppy mouthfeel,. Smooth, creamy. Some alcohol presence. Is somewhat subdued for 8.1%. It is hard to imagine a better tasting stout. Bear Republic has to, at this point, be recognized for what they are; one of the top 5 brewers in the United States.

I was absolutely shocked to find this bottle at the Beerhive in Edinburgh, Scotland, it is one of those beers which I have been dying to get into for a long time so I am very happy to be doing so tonight! This is a lovely beer; complex syrupy and coffee aroma, milky chocolate on the front of the tongue, light malt middle, with a lovely deep coffee finish - a myriad of coffee flavours which deepen and lead to a dark, crisp & dry coffee finish. I really think this is an awesome beer, it hits the taste buds & plays over your tongue with a blast of flavour. This really has to be one of the best stouts and indeed beers I have ever had to pleasure to sip. Full marks.

Bottle 750ml from Purvis. Big beer, with a great balance of aromas and flavours. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, and liquorice. Taste is sweet and bitter, with very long length. Palate is velvety, and full bodied. Black, with a frothy off-white head.

For a long time, this was one of my favorite Russian Imp. stouts. Thick and oily, dark as night, sweet and chocolately with a significant bitter balance at the end. Also, add some of this to jambalaya for a rich and sweet compliment to andouille sausage.

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2003 Rerate 5/2/03. Had this rated a 4.4, not quite high enough. Really great stuff. Impressive hoppy finish, very crisp and dry. Loads of subtle roasts, very much enjoy the fact that for an imperial it's got more of a milk chocolate character than coffee or bitter chocolate. Palate is blissfully quaffable, remains very full and rich yet is just gloriously drinkable. Yum. Original rating: Deep black color with a coffee-colored head that dissipates rapidly. Nose is full of caramel, toffee, and coffee. Initially very mild and sweet, follows up with nice roasts and chocolate malts. Rich and creamy. Lovely.

Pours a pitch black, with a large dark tan head that is a bit rocky, mostly lasting, and laces in sheets. Aroma is enormous, with a lot of chocolate, coffee, caramel, and a generous dose of hops. Flavor is equally large - tons of chocolate, middle becomes more coffee like, and ends with a very big and tasty hoppy bitterness. Full bodied, amazingly flavorful and complex - definitely one that needs to be consumed above fridge temp. I'm going to have to do a side-by-side with some Storm King since they are both amazing brews.
