cheapdark (1597), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 29, 2007 Updated: Jan 1, 2008 On tap at the Vintage Estates in Boardman, thanks Ron. Chocolate mousse head. Dark and attractive body, looks like used shovelhead motor oil. Sweet candy and slight roasty aroma, quite attractive. Initially I think to myself that this is not quite as bitter as most impy stouts. Comes across rather well behaved. This is friendly, almost like a sweet stout. After a few sips the typical offensive impy stout bitterness begins to evolve, but it still never gets as rough as a new impy stout such as Bells Exp. The offensiveness is present but it seems to be more controlled. Roasty bitterness build in the finish and lasts for many minutes after the session, yes I guess it is an imp stout, just took some session time for it to set in. I did not sense the hops in here that other reviewers did. Almost as enjoyable as Old Heathen and on par with Stoudt’s Fat Dog. IMHO certainly much more enjoyable and smoother than Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout, Oskar Blues Ten FIDY, Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, Thirsty Dog Siberian Night Imperial Stout, North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout and Victory Storm King. However, keep the fact in mind that I am not an impy stout lover.
Maverick34 (480), New York, USA Oct 6, 2008 Pours black - tastes black. A bit on the mild side for an I Russian but pretty good nontheless. larryLSB (17), La Selva Beach, California, USA Oct 5, 2008 Bomber poured into a glass, big dark tan head. Aroma was sweet, maybe bittersweet chocolate, maybe molasses.
This brew goes down very smooth, and as the brewery says, can sneak up on you!. Overerall a great beer! jjuf1853 (208), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Oct 1, 2008 Bottle pours a pure black color with a thick tan head. Aroma is bittersweet dark chocolate. Wondeful medley of flavors that include tobacco, roasted caramel malts, licorice, and dark roasted coffee. Nice amount of hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Quite nice! jstraw (466), Oak Park, Illinois, USA Oct 1, 2008 Bomber at Jerry’s. Black with decent, creamy brown head / Lighter, roast nose / Medium to full body, some chewiness, acidic to point of bitterness, with balance of malt and hops, and decent, bitter finish / Simpler flavors of dark roast coffee with notes of molasses and brown sugar / Surprisingly mediocre from BR. can8ianben (641), Pasadena, California, USA Sep 22, 2008 Big and dark and black. Thin tan head on top, subtle hoppy overtones in the nose and crisp bite on the palate. Thick mouthfeel, almost chewy. Malt, malt, malty, malt. Smooth and sweet and very rich. This one is pretty fantastic!
