mreusch (433), Olathe, Kansas, USA Apr 27, 2008 Bomber, with about a year on it. Pours a dark brown with a fizzy one finger tan head, minimal lacing. Aroma is nice, with lots of dark fruits, along with chocolate, molasses, brown sugar and espresso. Flavor is more dark fruits, roasty malts, chocolate, and some caramel, and more than a hint of citrus hops. Mello and tasty, this is one nice, accessible, affordable IS. If splitting hairs, I’d probably call this a robust stout more than an Imperial, but who really cares? Good stuff!
satan165 (69), River Grove, Illinois, USA Jul 25, 2008 so well balanced my head is spinning! wonderful roasted malt with accents of sweetness that yet are not cloying are working very harmoniously with wonderful malt character! just like IIPAs seem to be excused often by the public for having overwhelming unbalanced hops, too many imperial stouts are the reverse, with such an emphasis on coffee/chocolate malts that the hops are dead and gone or barely there. my tounge is sizzling from the wonderful bitterness they provide here yet i still can appreciate teh wonderful malts. why are bear republic bombers priced so low? ive yet to find a disappointing brew from these guys, this is definately another winner! Strykzone (880), Wood River, Illinois, USA Jul 22, 2008 Almost pure black with just the slightest red highlights. A nice combination of sweet and sour. The sour is from a surprising amount of hop and there is plenty of sweet malt giving milk chocolate flavors and cappuccino (the gas station kind). Some biscuit. Very smooth and creamy feel. 22 oz. bottle that emptied way too soon. Very good. Indulgence (25), Ajo, Arizona, USA Jul 22, 2008 It took a couple of sips before I GOT this one. I guess that I had too much chimichanga taste and had to wash it down. Plus I tested an IIPA before this and must have had some lingering flavors. Well, I now taste this beer and it’s a nice sipper. Aromas of hops from the initial pour, some blacked malts, but not too burnt, just right. An aggressive pour only got a 2 finger head that settled down in my Michelob Celebrate tulip glass, with some lacing left behind that lets you know this one is serious. If you agitate the beer, it posses a hoppy nose, but after it’s settled, the roasted malts appear with dark unsweetened chocolate covered raisins and strong espresso. A velvety layer exposes the bitter chocolate and the hops finish it off but not too bitter. Overall, a nice sipper and enjoyable brew. MrChopin (119), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 21, 2008 Black with small beige head. Scent has delicious chocolate-oat combination, some minor licorice and roast in the background. The flavor is more chocolate and roast with a little pine in the aftertaste. Big Bear is dry and bitter, but the palate is little thin for me, considering the style. Still, this is a tasty IPAaLLtHEwAY (93), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Jul 17, 2008
Bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville. Dark brown pour w/ medium head. Good lacing and retention. Slightly bitter coffee and chocolate aroma. Chocolate dominates the taste, but there are fairly assertive espresso notes also. Smooth and full.
