3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cellared bomber, shared and poured to snifters, displaying a black/brown hue, with a little ruby highlighting at the stem, frothy, brownish tan head foam, and waves & spots of lacing. The nose was quite roasted, with notes of wood & molasses. Ditto on the flavor, adding mocha notes, and resinous, piney hop bitterness, with roasted dryness, but a stubborn hint of sweetness that lingered on the tongue. Aged well, finishing dry & pleasantly astringent, and still a very impressive Imperial Stout that I hear might not be distributed this way in the future?

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
A hefty Black stout with caramel sweetness lightening a deeply robust roasted heartiness. At 8.1% amazingly hidden .
Appearance: Black as the name implies
Taste: complex again as heavily roasted meets sweet caramel, chocolate, toast bitter and sweet notes on the finish
Taste: Merchants often store cold however best served 50-55degrees
to allow the complex flavors to flourish.
Palate: dangerously drinkable at 8.1% Bear Republic even warns on the label " Don’t get mauled by the bear". Would suggest serving evening near Christmas or a chilly winter night with the fire place lit, the Christmas tree decorated with holiday cheer, serve chocolate dessert offering or simple chocolate particularly hazelnut candies, also the car keys firmly secured for the night. Big and bold the bear will maul you if you drink this offering to fast.
Only side note have seen a little more smokiness in different batches
and again often stored cold for some reason in areas that stay reasonably cold. A hot climate like Arizona or so one would consider storing cold. Dark room or out of sunlight just fine provided you live in an area that allows.
Overall: Bear Republic Big Bear Black typically sells for under $5.00 . An absolute bargain for .20 Cents or so an ounce Stout of this caliber and complexity. Extremely drinkable with perhaps the only flaw a hint of extra smoke flavor however Bear Republic lists this upfront as well as all the complexities and delivers nicely as promised.
Despite Winning several gold metals and awards Bear Republic
has not let there success go to their heads, giving the common man reason to enjoy such a fine offering without draining their wallet dry.
A gem find if you have never tried sure to please the stout lover. Cheers!

An excellent stout from the west coast. I absolutely love this beer and all the beautiful blends of malts, hops and oats. Just a great beer!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cellar temperature and into a snifter. Picture of perfection with a moussy, tannish crown topping a midnight black body. Sweet, treacly thick, caramelised sugar and chocolate, molasses, marzipan, fresh strapped leather and tar tickles at the olfactories. A shift by comparison with a musky, perfumed and sweet start on the palate. Light caramel and vanilla undertones with dusty, roasted malts and bitter/sweet chocolate coming in late. Rose musk and pot pourri enters every orifice. Tar and leather comes through as does a hint of liquorice root. Bitter, peppery finish, long and dusty chocolate aftertaste. Medium bodied with light, prickly carbonation and smooth passed the mid-palate. Hides the 8.1% ABV well but it sneaks up on you quick. Very lovely drinking. I like it!! 6/12/14. Draft at Bull McCabes. Pours near black but with a lighter head. Super tasty with a smooth mouthfeel and lots of chocolate and coffee notes. Reminds me a lot of Founders Breakfast stout.

UPDATED: JUN 8, 2014 A big beer that follows up on its promise. Full complex body gets better as it warms up and in the end it totally covers the alcohol content.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black pour, small brown head.
Roasty chocolate aroma, flavor is toasty with a bit of a bite. A lot of chocolate up front bit more bitter that I typically like my imperial stouts. Quite chewy.

Pours black with a brown head and sweet aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is sweet, nice chocolatly notes throughout with roasted malt and bitter coffee notes leading to a burnt, roasty finish. Delicious stout
